Thumbs down as he puts Spurs into 18th

Aston Villa left the Tottenham Hotspur stadium with all three points following goals from Johan Mazambi, Nicholas Jackson and Emi Buendia.

The Lilywhites finally broke their goal drought of five Premier League games without a goal.

Whilst Unai Emery's men got their first win of the season at a ground they won 2-1 at last season.

Today's match had encouraging signs for the home side; they outperformed their opponents' xG with 1.22 against 1.16 and had 63.9% possession to Villa's 36%. 

Speaking on the performance, Roberto De Zerbi said: “Today I was very disappointed, very sad, very frustrated with the performance, because we can't lose this game in this way, absolutely.”

Today was the first time De Zerbi fielded an attack of Omar Marmoush on the left wing with Dominic Solanke through the middle and Savio on the left.

The latter of the three looked the most dangerous.

For Unai Emery, Nicholas Jackson led the line at a ground where he previously scored a hat-trick for Chelsea and scored a brilliant goal on the break, flicking the ball over Micky Van De Ven before nestling the ball into the bottom left-hand corner past Antonin Kinsky.

However, Spurs once again started another league game off with a fast start, forcing the opposition into a low block and having almost 11 men behind the ball.

Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki had to make 4 first-half saves, the most this season after Chelsea's Emi Martinez, who proved today why he replaced the Argentine.

The most impressive came from a Savinho half-volley in the 20th minute through a crowded box, forcing the Japanese international to make a save.

Despite the strong start, Spurs once again went a goal down before half-time. 

A tap-in by Mazambi just before the first-half whistle rang out, completely against the run of play, leaving De Zerbi with the familiar job of reviving his team's performance at half-time.

Mohammed Kudus was brought on to inject some pace for Mateus Fernandes' lack of creative flair at the break as the home side anxiously awaited their first goal.

The Spurs manager, speaking on his decision to take the Portuguese off: “I didn't like what I saw from Mateus Fernandes.”

It looked like Kudus was De Zerbi's saviour for a moment as he dived onto a scrambled ball in the box to tap in what he thought was Spurs’ leveller, only for VAR to intervene and conclude Andy Robertson strayed offside in the build-up.

The Villains capitalised on the confidence boost that Spurs received before half-time and scored again on the break via a familiar foe for Tottenham in Nicholas Jackson.

The home side huffed and puffed and even brought on James Maddison for Solanke on the 66th minute, moving Omar Marmoush in an attempt to resuscitate his side's second-half performance.

Then the nail in the coffin came-the goal to seal the victory.

John McGinn cut back onto his left foot to find Emi Buendia, who riffled an effort into Kinsky's top left, sending Spurs fans home.

With the introduction of Connor Gallagher came the first goal of the season following a Kudus cut back to the 6-yard box for North London’s side’s first goal of the season.

Jean Paul Van Hecke nodded home the second after a ball was delivered by Robertson, but it was ultimately too little too late. 

For Villa, they can enter the international break on a high, a first win, but problems are apparent defensively.

For Spurs, another loss at home, making it only 2 wins at home in a year as they are left in 18th.

The rebuild needs a resurrection.
