Manchester City survived a remarkable eight-goal thriller at the Etihad Stadium, beating Sunderland 5-3 to maintain their place at the top of the Premier League. Enzo Fernández gave City an early lead before Brian Brobbey struck twice to twice bring Sunderland level, while Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo put the hosts back in front.

Liverpool edged past Bournemouth through an Alexander Isak goal as the Reds avoided a potential banana skin on a Premier League weekend full of upsets. Isak’s second-half strike was the only moment of substance in a physical encounter largely bereft of goal-mouth action, and made Andoni Iraola’s return to Bournemouth a happy one.
