Club Brugge vs Aston Villa - Villa triumph in Bruges

The Jan Breydel Stadium was rocking as fans were off their seats in this electric back-and-forth fixture. 

Unai Emery’s men strike three past Brugge and climb to the top of the Champions League table. 

Villa pushed to the final third early as Emi Buendia got a chance, but he dragged his shot wide. 

This set the tone as Villa looked to score their first goal of the 26/27 season. 

Pau Torres drove forward from defence with an incredible, mesmerizing run and played it wide to John McGinn, who placed a beautiful finish into the bottom corner from distance with his left foot. 

The captain curls it around the keeper, who had no chance of saving it, firing Villa in front at Brugge. 

The Brugge midfield was non-existent as Pau Torres drove through the heart of midfield with no pressure from the Brugge players. 

Yan Sommer is called into action consecutively, following strikes from Hemmings and Jackson as Villa pushed forward for a second goal. 

Brugge responded and aimed to push forward, applying pressure as Virgili takes on Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the left-hand channel and plays the ball into an unmarked Hugo Vetlesen, who strikes the ball first time with his left foot, as it spins past Suzuki into the back of the net. 

Moments after conceding the equaliser, Villa go down the other end as Jackson links up with Gomes, who turns and slips Buendia in, who finishes past Yan Sommer.

The crafted connection between Jackson and Gomes is sublime as Unai smiles from the touchline.

 Vast improvement from Unai Emery’s Villa side as they display their attacking quality. 

Jackson has been brilliant in this first half with his overall CF play; he drives past 3 players with amazing footwork on the halfway line and plays it to McGinn, who strikes from distance; Sommer saves comfortably. 

Despair as Yan Sommer has a nightmare as he sprints out of goal towards a loose ball; Jackson maintains composure as he sprints past 2 defenders and touches it past Sommer, leaving him with a free net to pass the ball into.

Tensions flare as the referee is sent to the monitor as the ball strikes Wan Bissaka’s hand, awarding Brugge a penalty to get back into the game. Tresoldi fires it low and hard past Zion Suzuki, making it 3-2, which lifts the atmosphere with 30 minutes left. 

Brugge look like a different side this half as they pin back Villa in their own half and apply pressure, testing Suzuki’s goal. Tresoldi strikes the woodwork after having a major confidence boost from his penalty. 

Brugge was far more dominant in the second half, although Villa’s warning signs are still evident as Seys clears the ball of the line. 

Player Of The Match 

Nicolas Jackson was unbelievable in this fixture, particularly in the first half. As per Squawka on X, no player created more chances (3) or completed more take-ons (2) in the first half than Nico. He rounded off his performance with his first Villa goal past Sommers’ net. 

Villa will look to maintain their attacking quality in upcoming fixtures as they face off against Nottingham Forest on the weekend. They will look to achieve their first win of the 26/27 Premier League season and move up the table. 

Club Brugge, on the other hand, will look to bounce back from defeat as they face off against Antwerp on Sunday in the Belgian Pro League.
