Manchester United claimed a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford in a dramatic encounter that offered relief for Ruben Amorim while raising further questions for Enzo Maresca. The result, United’s second league win of the campaign, eases some of the scrutiny around Amorim, but it came with plenty of twists.

United made two changes from their humiliating 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City, with Casemiro and Harry Maguire replacing Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro. Chelsea also made two adjustments from their midweek loss at Bayern Munich, as Estevão Willian and Wesley Fofana came in for Tosin Adarabioyo and Malo Gusto.

The match turned almost immediately. Robert Sánchez was sent off inside the opening minutes for bringing down Bryan Mbeumo on the edge of the box, leaving Chelsea with a mountain to climb. Maresca’s response shocked many, as he sacrificed both wingers, Pedro Neto and Estevão, to bring on substitute goalkeeper Philip Jorgensen and defender Tosin Adarabioyo. Within minutes, United made their advantage count, Bruno Fernandes finishing off a slick team move to put them ahead.

Chelsea’s problems deepened when star man Cole Palmer was forced off in the 20th minute with a groin issue. His replacement, midfielder Andrey Santos, left João Pedro as the Blues’ only attacking option. Under relentless pressure, Chelsea conceded again in the 37th minute, and at 2-0 United looked poised to run away with it. The game changed once again on the stroke of half-time, as Casemiro’s clumsy challenge earned him a second yellow card, reducing both sides to ten men and swinging the balance back towards the visitors.

The second half settled into a slower tempo. Amorim’s decision to replace Sesko with Ugarte signalled United’s intent to protect their lead. Chelsea saw more of the ball and eventually halved the deficit when Trevoh Chalobah powered in a header from a Reece James cross. The Blues pushed for an equaliser, but despite a late surge they couldn’t find the decisive breakthrough.

For United, the victory was as much about resilience as quality. Amorim will hope it sparks momentum after a difficult start. For Chelsea, though, the concerns mount. One win in four, an early red card, key injuries, and a lack of attacking presence once again underline the challenges facing Maresca.
