Chelsea F.C. beat Tottenham Hotspur F.C. 2-1 in a fiery London derby.
Tottenham’s Premier League survival now hangs in the balance after defeat to their bitter rivals at Stamford Bridge.
Goals from Enzo Fernández and Andrey Santos secured Chelsea’s first Premier League win in eight games, and their first league victory at home in more than three months.
The result moves Chelsea back into the European qualification places while leaving Tottenham at serious risk of relegation heading into the final round of league fixtures.
Tempers flare in crucial derby
A tense encounter was always expected between the two sides with the worst disciplinary records in the Premier League this season.
The long-running history of bad-tempered clashes between these clubs, alongside the mutual hostility between both sets of supporters, also created a hostile atmosphere throughout the evening.
The prospect of finishing the season with victory over their fiercest rivals appeared to motivate Chelsea following Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City F.C..
When Chelsea took a 2-0 lead after 67 minutes courtesy of Santos, it looked as though the home side may have been heading towards a relatively comfortable victory.
However, those hopes were disrupted when Richarlison turned Pape Matar Sarr’s clever backheel beyond Robert Sánchez to halve Tottenham’s deficit and set up a frantic final 15 minutes.

Four players were booked as Spurs pushed desperately for a late equaliser.
Substitute James Maddison came closest when he was tackled by Chelsea defender Jorrel Hato while preparing to shoot from inside the six-yard box.
The resulting corner led to a VAR review for a potential penalty following a collision between Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella and Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven.
Cucurella was booked for the offence, but VAR determined the foul had occurred before the corner was taken, meaning no penalty was awarded.
When the corner was eventually delivered, Sánchez claimed the ball inside his own six-yard box before briefly sparking panic after appearing to drop it, only to recover possession immediately.
Maddison later had another opportunity after former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher won Tottenham a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. However, his effort sailed over the crossbar, before Sánchez denied a late strike from Mathys Tel to secure the points for Chelsea.
Chelsea show signs of improvement
A run of just one point from their previous seven league matches had seen Chelsea fall out of contention for the Champions League places.
That was mathematically confirmed earlier in the evening following Bournemouth’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City.
This victory represented the culmination of several improved performances under interim coach Callum MacFarlane and demonstrated the energy and tactical cohesion that had often been missing under former manager Liam Rosenior.
Fernández gave Chelsea the lead after 18 minutes with a long-range strike that curled beyond Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.
The Argentine midfielder then struck the crossbar from a free-kick ten minutes later, while Kinský was also forced into a save from Pedro Neto shortly before half-time.

Chelsea survived a wave of Tottenham pressure early in the second half before striking clinically on the counterattack for their second goal.
Cole Palmer picked up a loose ball inside the centre circle before driving forward and releasing Neto down the right.
Neto’s deep cross found Fernández at the back post, who slid the ball across goal for an unmarked Santos to finish from eight yards out.
That strike marked the first time Chelsea had scored twice in a single game under MacFarlane, and this derby victory feels like a significant sign of recovery following an appalling run of form.
Player of the Match:
Enzo Fernández
Fernández has now reached double figures for league goals in a season for the first time in his career and has scored more than half of Chelsea’s goals across MacFarlane’s two spells as interim manager.
His movement between Chelsea’s left side and central midfield consistently caused Tottenham problems and helped open Spurs up for Chelsea’s second goal.
Having previously been suspended by Rosenior after hinting at a potential future move to Real Madrid CF, Fernández captained Chelsea on the night and maintained an excellent work rate throughout.
What’s next?
Chelsea travel to Sunderland A.F.C. for their final game of the season knowing victory would almost certainly secure some form of European football.
Defeat, however, could still see the Blues finish as low as 12th and outside the qualification places entirely.
Tottenham will almost certainly secure survival with a draw at home against Everton F.C. and would remain safe regardless of their own result should West Ham United F.C. fail to beat Leeds United F.C..
