Aston Villa vs Arsenal Preview: Can the Champions Capitalise on Villa’s Rebuild?
For years, Aston Villa have been a thorn in the side of an Arsenal team desperately trying to get over the line. On more than one occasion, this fixture has left a sizeable dent in the Gunners’ title hopes.
Think back to the gut-wrenching 2–0 home defeat in April 2024, which blemished an otherwise near-flawless end to the 2023/24 campaign and helped put the title agonisingly out of Mikel Arteta’s reach. Then came the 2–2 draw in January 2025, when Villa clawed their way back from two goals down to deliver another damaging blow to Arsenal’s title challenge.
This time, however, things are vastly different.
Arsenal travel to Villa Park as reigning Premier League champions, facing a Villa side that barely resembles the one that caused them so many problems in previous seasons.
A huge factor in Villa’s past success against Arsenal has been their talisman, Ollie Watkins. The striker consistently found ways to penetrate a usually imperious Arsenal defence, with an impressive seven goals in 12 Premier League appearances against the north London side. But he won’t be adding to that tally this weekend.
Watkins recently sealed a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, bringing an end to a hugely successful six-year spell at Villa Park. After leading the line for the Villans and playing a major role in some of the club’s biggest moments in recent history, his presence will be sorely missed. But certainly not by Arsenal.
And Watkins isn’t the only major departure. Morgan Rogers also left for an eye-watering club-record £117 million, while Youri Tielemans and Emi Martínez have also moved on. The dismantling of Villa’s spine signals the end of an era and the beginning of another, but Arsenal may have arrived at the perfect time to take advantage of a side under reconstruction.
The two clubs could not have made more contrasting starts to the new campaign. Arsenal gave newly-promoted Coventry a stark welcome to the Premier League, dispatching them with relative ease in a 3–0 victory without ever appearing to leave second gear.
Special mention goes out to Christos Tzolis, who has looked every bit an Arsenal player since arriving for a relatively modest £35 million. It is still early days, but the initial signs suggest the Gunners may have landed one of the bargains of the summer.
Arteta has also taken no chances defensively, reinforcing his back line with none other than Villa’s former starting centre-back, Ezri Konsa. Whether he is handed his first start against his old club remains to be seen, but if he is, the reception awaiting him at Villa Park will be something to look out for.
Villa, meanwhile, endured a nightmare opening weekend, suffering a 4–0 thrashing at the hands of Brighton l a result Unai Emery will desperately hope isn’t a sign of things to come.
There is reason for optimism, though, because much-needed reinforcements have continued to arrive. Notable signings include Nicolas Jackson and Leon Goretzka, who are among eight new additions this summer.
However, with any side, time is needed for new players to gel and work within a system. But if there’s any manager capable of getting Villa back on track, it is Unai Emery. Over the years, he has earned his reputation as one of the best managers in the Premier League, with a history of consistently exceeding expectations.
But the worry for Villa will be that this is a fixture that has arrived too early in the season, against an Arsenal side hungry to establish themselves as the new dynasty in this league.
And based on the history between the two teams, don’t expect Arsenal to show much mercy to a teething Villa side.
