Newcastle United 2-1 Hull City: Hull’s unbeaten start ends at the hands of the Magpies

Two goals in the first ten minutes from Joe Willock and Lewis Hall earned Newcastle all three points in a tightly contested match at St James’ Park this afternoon. 

Hull City were much improved in the second half and pulled one back through Mohamed Ali-Cho but couldn’t find the equaliser late on to earn a draw, they suffered their first defeat of the Premier League season so far. 

Newcastle were clearly out to right the wrongs from Monday evening and absolutely flew out of the blocks taking the lead in the third minute as Harvey Barnes picked up the ball on the edge of the box .

The Newcastle winger found Joe Willock inside who fired past  Kostas Tzolakis at the near-post to put the home side 1-0 up. 

The Geordies were flying and doubled the lead just four minutes later as Lewis Hall who had previously won the ball from McBurnie combined brilliantly with Harvey Barnes before slamming the ball in the bottom corner from just inside the box to make it 2-0 to Newcastle. 

Newcastle looked dangerous every time they went forward early on but it was Hull that should have scored the next goal as Hornicek was caught on the ball by Belloumi as it looked all but certain that the Algerian would score but the Czech goalkeeper made up for his mistake with a superb point-blank save to keep his side 2-0 up. 

As the first half went on Hull grew into the game but couldn’t create anything substantial against a Newcastle side that have conceded eight goals so far this season in the Premier League. 

Just as we ticked over the 45th minute mark Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Sorba Thomas was deemed to have stuck an arm out to trip Jacob Murphy in the box which looked quite bizarre to be honest but Tony Harrington pointed to the spot giving Newcastle a chance to kill the game in the first half. 

Yoane Wissa stepped up and had his penalty brilliantly saved by Tzolakis low down to the bottom corner to just about keep Hull City in the game heading into the second 45. 

Both teams had chances early in the second half with Botman having a free header from a free-kick that was saved by Tzolakis before just a minute later Hull went on the counter with Belloumi curling a shot just wide to keep the score at 2-0. 

About midway through the second half Hull did pull one back through Mohamed Ali-Cho who had only been on the pitch about three minutes as Lewis Miley was caught on the ball in his own half by Belloumi who found Cho in the box with the Frenchman firing low past Hornicek to get the Tigers back in the game. 

The goal seemed to give Hull City huge confidence as they were gaining momentum putting pressure on the Newcastle goal as Belloumi had an effort from outside the box which was saved comfortably enough by Hornicek but the visitors were getting closer to the equaliser. 

Going into six minutes of added time Newcastle had their backs against the wall as Hull were coming forward with attack after attack in search of the equalising goal but time was running out for the away side to keep their unbeaten record so far in the Premier League intact. 

It was a long six minutes for Newcastle but they managed to see it out and head into the international break with a much needed three points, Hull were much improved in the second half and you could argue that they deserved a point but in the end suffered their first defeat of the Premier League season at St James’ Park.
