Fenerbahçe star Kerem Aktürkoğlu’s second-half strike stunned the Kosovan capital, including the thousands in attendance, as Turkey’s wait to return to football’s biggest stage came to an end after 24 years in an enthralling 90 minutes of World Cup qualifying drama.

The first half-hour was dominated by resolute defending from the home side, with Turkey controlling possession. The likes of Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Kenan Yıldız both saw efforts denied, as Kosovo held firm with five blocks in a period marked by a lack of clear-cut chances at either end.

The encounter eventually sparked into life, and it was the ‘Dardanians’ who almost struck first. Veldin Hodza fed the ball to Fisnik Asllani, who struck it sweetly to force the best out of Uğurcan Çakır, who tipped the ball onto the woodwork to deny Kosovo the opener and a huge step towards a historic first World Cup qualification since joining FIFA and UEFA.

Asllani’s strike remained the closest chance of the opening 45 minutes, with Çalhanoğlu denied twice from range by a stubborn Kosovo defence.

Both sides headed into the break with a sense of effort but no breakthrough, aside from that moment of goalkeeping brilliance.

With both nations eyeing World Cup glory, the second half began with urgency.

Inside seven minutes of the restart, Kerem Aktürkoğlu tapped in a miscued effort by Orkun Kökçü.

Despite calls for offside, the goal stood, handing Turkey a crucial advantage and reigniting hopes of returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2002.

Just after the hour mark, Arijanet Murić denied Kenan Yıldız after he cut inside from the left, keeping Kosovo in the game as they pushed for an equaliser.

Turkey began to show signs of fatigue, and Kosovo grew into the game, dominating possession for much of the final 20 minutes. However, Turkey mirrored Kosovo’s earlier defensive resilience, making crucial interceptions to protect their lead.

Kosovo nearly capitalised on a mistake from Barış Alper Yılmaz, who gifted possession to Florent Muslija on the edge of the area, but his effort narrowly missed the target a let-off that left the Turkish side relieved.

The home side’s final chance came in the 86th minute, when Fisnik Asllani struck from distance, but his effort lacked the power to trouble Çakır.

Despite six minutes of added time, Kosovo could not find a way through.

At full-time, it was Turkey who sparked scenes of pandemonium. Players, staff, and supporters flooded the pitch as the nation secured qualification for the World Cup ending a run of five consecutive failed campaigns.

Turkey will now look ahead to a group featuring Paraguay, Australia, and co-hosts the United States, as they prepare for their long-awaited return to the global stage.
