Manchester United vs Roma: can United end winless run against high-flying Roma?

Manchester United host Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday, with both sides looking for a crucial Champions League victory.

Michael Carrick's United have endured a difficult start to the season, sitting 17th in the Premier League with just one win from their opening nine matches.

Their European campaign has been similarly disappointing, collecting three points from their first three fixtures to leave them 21st in the league phase.

United's latest setback came in a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where Lisandro Martínez was sent off following a challenge on Wesley Fofana.

When questioned about the defender's commitment, Carrick said: "I have no concerns about his commitment. Things happen in football. Sometimes you make mistakes. The commitment is not an issue at all."

With results putting his position under increasing pressure, Carrick will be desperate for a response against Roma before the club reassess his future during the international break.

He remains confident his side can turn things around, saying: "I know the players and I know what we're capable of as a team. We've shown it in spells. We have to act on it now and make a difference quite quickly."

Meanwhile, Gian Piero Gasperini's Roma have enjoyed a much stronger domestic campaign, sitting third in Serie A, just four points behind leaders Lazio.

They have scored 28 goals in ten league matches, with Donyell Malen leading the way after an impressive start to the season.

Roma's European form has been less convincing, collecting four points from their opening three matches, making Tuesday's encounter important for both sides.

Their latest outing ended in a convincing 5-2 victory away to Udinese, extending their unbeaten start to the Serie A campaign.

Gasperini is aware of the threat United possess, saying: "They have extremely strong players. Sometimes you go through difficult periods, but eventually you find your way back."

Previous meetings:

Roma have struggled at Old Trafford, losing all four of their previous visits.

Their most recent encounter came in the 2021 Europa League semi-finals, when United secured a memorable 6-2 victory in the first leg, with braces from Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani alongside goals from Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood.

Team news:

United have received a boost with Patrick Dorgu and Kobbie Mainoo returning to training, although Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Šeško and Manuel Ugarte remain unavailable.

Amad Diallo picked up a knock against Chelsea but is expected to be available.

Roma have their own injury concerns, with Paulo Dybala, Manu Koné, Mile Svilar and Lorenzo Pellegrini all missing the trip to Manchester.

Gasperini also confirmed that he is travelling with just 17 players, highlighting the extent of Roma's current selection problems.

Predicted line-ups:

Manchester United predicted XI (4-3-3): Senne Lammens; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui; Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans, Bruno Fernandes; Amad Diallo, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo.

Roma predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Pierluigi Gollini; Daniele Ghilardi, Gianluca Mancini, Evan Ndicka, Wesley; Bryan Cristante, Marten de Roon; Niccolò Pisilli, Matías Soulé, Tommaso Baldanzi; Donyell Malen.
