Haaland Strikes Again as Brave Coventry Push Manchester City to Their Limits

Manchester City were pushed to their limits by a resilient Coventry City.

Lampard had urged his players to embrace their underdog status with bravery rather than fear and they certainly did. 

A defensive mix-up almost gifted Coventry an opener inside the first five minutes, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma called into unexpected action from a routine situation.

Rúben Dias gave possession away cheaply moments later, allowing Coventry to break and strike the post, a let-off City would not have wanted to rely on.

Their number nine provided the relief, with Haaland rising to meet an Antoine Semenyo cross to the back post in the 26th minute, continuing a well-drilled routine between the pair.

City dominated the ball for long spells but were far from convincing without it. 

It proved to be the game’s only goal, though not for a lack of trying from the visitors.

Coventry threw themselves into the contest with real ambition rather than sitting back against the champions-elect, forcing City into uncomfortable moments throughout.

Playing true to their manager’s words to approach the game with bravery, that they did.

City will reflect on missed opportunities of their own.

Twenty minutes into the second half this had the feel of a comfortable two or possibly three goal cushion, but neither Haaland nor Rayan Cherki were clinical enough to further close the game off, leaving the door open for the nervy finish that followed.

Coventry’s belief grew the longer the deficit stayed at one goal, with Donnarumma’s reflexes and some last ditch defending needed to repel a string of crosses and long throws into the box late on.

Elliot Anderson was again the standout in midfield, seemingly with the most touches of anyone on the pitch as he dropped deep to dictate play and repeatedly threaded passes through the lines, a player Maresca reportedly views as a future holding midfielder despite his teammates having barely trained together.

For all their efforts, Coventry remained unrewarded, unable to find the finishing touch to match their bravery on the ball.

Haaland’s goal extended City’s perfect start to the season, three wins from three games, as they sit top of the Premier League table. 

Attention now turns quickly to a Champions League trip to face Porto on Tuesday, with the manager expected to make several changes to freshen up the squad before refocusing on a huge derby test away at Manchester United next weekend.
