At a rainy Molineux, Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated West Midlands rivals Aston Villa 2-0 to record just their second Premier League victory of the year.
João Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes’ goals gave Wolves the derby bragging rights they deserved, and ensured they did not match Derby County’s record-low Premier League points total. Meanwhile, Villa’s push for Champions League qualification suffered a setback.
After winning just once in their last four league games, Villa entered Friday’s derby hoping to regain momentum but were unable to capitalise on early opportunities.

In the first half, the visitors produced the better openings. After Matty Cash’s delivery, Douglas Luiz forced a save from José Sá, and Pau Torres headed wide from a promising position. Toti Gomes volleyed off target during an evenly contested first stanza as Wolves showed flashes of attacking intent.
The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute. Adam Armstrong diverted Jackson Tchatchoua’s pass into João Gomes’ path after a flowing Wolves move, and the Brazilian sent a powerful finish off the underside of the crossbar to make it 1-0.

Late in the game, Villa surged forward in search of an equaliser, coming closest when Yerson Mosquera produced an outstanding goal-line block to deny Amadou Onana a moment that proved crucial.
Wolves struck again in the 98th minute, deep into stoppage time. Rodrigo Gomes turned home to seal the victory after Mateus Mané released João Gomes into the box, with Rodrigo Gomes’ shot sweetly diverted into his path.
It was one of Wolves’ most disciplined displays of the season. Even when seeing less of the ball, their efficiency and organisation at key moments proved decisive.
With a commanding performance, João Gomes ended a 37-game Premier League goal drought, while Mosquera’s defensive intervention preserved the lead at a vital stage. Wolves absorbed pressure effectively and struck during transitions thanks to their compact defensive structure.

Villa created opportunities and dominated phases of the game but lacked a cutting edge. Despite registering more shots and controlling possession for periods, they struggled to convert dominance into decisive moments.
Manager Unai Emery’s difficult record at Molineux continues, as Villa once again failed to secure victory on their travels to Wolves.
Wolves maintained a compact defensive stance, emphasising rapid transitions and midfield strength. Their strategy encouraged Villa to advance before exploiting space on the counter, particularly in the closing stages.
In the end, Wolves were more clinical during transitional moments and that proved the difference.
