The Irons must hammer all the correct nails in front of goal tonight to give the people of East London a glimmer of hope of playing Premier League football next season, as West Ham United prepare to face a struggling Nottingham Forest side in a crucial battle for survival.
Pressure is intensifying for Nuno Espírito Santo following Saturday’s damaging 3–0 defeat at Molineux against bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves are a club deeply engraved in Nuno’s managerial memory, representing his formative chapter in English football. During nearly four years in charge, he guided them from the Championship to the Premier League, secured back-to-back top-half finishes, and delivered European football through a memorable Europa League run.
Tonight, however, Nuno finds himself facing Forest at the London Stadium, a club that dismissed him in September following a fractured relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis amid disagreements over club hierarchy and internal operations. Victory is imperative. A win would close the gap to Forest and could prove pivotal in avoiding relegation a nightmare West Ham supporters have not endured since 2011, when the club finished 20th in the 2010–11 Premier League season.
That relegation was followed by redemption a year later. Goals from Carlton Cole and Ricardo Vaz Tê at Wembley in May 2012 sealed a dramatic play-off final victory over Blackpool, restoring West Ham to England’s top flight. Thirteen years on, the fear of repeating that history looms large.
West Ham are desperate to exorcise the demons of their perilous past. It is universally understood that the Hammers must correct the wrongs of a season plagued by deflated performances and secure their first league win since beating Newcastle United at home on 2 November.
Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paquetá and French international Jean-Clair Todibo remain doubts after missing the defeat to Wolves, though Nuno confirmed both are “working hard to be involved.” There could also be opportunities for new signings, with Brazilian striker Pablo Felipe who completed a £21.8 million move from Gil Vicente and Valentín Castellanos, who arrived from Lazio in a £26 million deal, both pushing for involvement.
A victory would also see West Ham complete a league double over Forest for the first time since the 1968–69 season. Ironically, the reverse fixture at the City Ground a defeat for Forest was Nuno’s final match in charge of the club back in August.
Forest’s Crisis Deepens
Since Nuno’s departure, Forest’s season has continued to darken. Sean Dyche became the second manager appointed this campaign following Ange Postecoglou’s brief tenure, which ended after just eight matches. Dyche initially made a positive impression, winning four of his first eight games, but momentum has since collapsed.
Forest now arrive in London on the back of four consecutive defeats. Another loss would mark five in a row a sequence Dyche has never endured in his managerial career. Despite this, there are signs of potential recovery if Forest can eradicate the costly mistakes that continue to undermine them.
Those errors were brutally exposed at Villa Park last weekend. Goalkeeper John rushed off his line in an attempt to intercept an Aston Villa counter-attack initiated by Youri Tielemans’ clever pass. John McGinn exploited the space, using Nikola Milenković as cover before firing into an empty net. Dyche has been vocal about such moments, stressing that mentality alone is not enough when avoidable errors repeatedly leave his side with mountains to climb.
The statistics support his frustration. Forest have committed 22 errors leading directly to opposition goals the joint-second highest tally in the Premier League.
Forest travel without Brazilian goalkeeper John, while Chris Wood remains sidelined with a knee injury sustained in mid-October. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ryan Yates and Dan Ndoye are also unavailable.
