The “World’s Stage” welcomes Manchester City as West Ham United prepare for a crucial battle in their fight for Premier League survival.
Fortunes are finely balanced. West Ham have the opportunity to climb out of the relegation zone with a hugely important victory against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, a team they have failed to defeat in their previous nine Premier League meetings at the London Stadium.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s Hammers have gathered some impressive results recently, with their defeat to Liverpool at Anfield being their only loss in the last five Premier League matches.
West Ham now face a Manchester City side who missed a huge opportunity to close the gap to league leaders Arsenal to just two points.
Elliot Anderson’s curling strike rescued a point for relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, adding another twist to the Premier League title race.
The stage is set for an enthralling encounter, with City chasing the title and West Ham fighting for survival.
Summerville Injury Blow for West Ham
Despite everything being on the line for West Ham, they have been dealt a significant blow ahead of the match with the injury to Crysencio Summerville.
The Dutch winger sustained a knock during West Ham’s FA Cup quarter-final qualification victory over Brentford and was forced to continue playing as Nuno had already used all available substitutions.
Summerville has been one of West Ham’s most influential players this season.
After a difficult start following his arrival from Leeds United, the Dutchman has played a pivotal role in West Ham’s survival push, contributing seven goals and two assists in 27 matches.
His performances have produced nine goal involvements across all competitions for the East London club.
Adama Traoré could be tasked with filling the void left by Summerville.
Meanwhile, Pablo Jesús, who recently returned to training following a calf injury, is unlikely to feature against City but could return for West Ham’s upcoming trip to Aston Villa.
Nuno Espírito Santo will hope that the absence of key players does not derail their chances of escaping the relegation zone.
Manchester City Chasing Arsenal
For Manchester City, the fixture represents a crucial game in hand and a must-win encounter for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Guardiola described City’s recent draw with Nottingham Forest as a missed opportunity to apply further pressure on Arsenal, who restored their seven-point lead after defeating Brighton.
City will remain without Joško Gvardiol, who suffered a serious tibial fracture earlier this year during the draw against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
The Croatian defender continues his rehabilitation and is expected to return later in the season, although the club are unwilling to rush his recovery given his importance to the team.
Rico Lewis also remains unavailable after missing the last four matches with an ankle injury, although he could soon return to selection contention.
Meanwhile, Mateo Kovačić has returned to first-team training following the ankle injury that has limited him to fewer than three appearances this season, but he is not yet ready to return to action.
Head-to-Head Record
West Ham have struggled historically against Manchester City.
The Hammers are winless in their last 20 meetings with City, losing 17 and drawing three.
Their last victory came in September 2015 at the Etihad Stadium, when goals from Diafra Sakho and Victor Moses secured a memorable win.
It remains the club’s longest winless run against a single opponent in the Premier League.
Match Outlook
West Ham are chasing back-to-back Premier League victories for just the third time this season.
Previous winning streaks came against Newcastle and Burnley in November and Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland earlier this year.
For Nuno Espírito Santo’s side, three points are vital.
Victory could lift them out of the relegation zone and provide a crucial boost in their fight to avoid a return to the Championship for the first time in over 15 years.
However, they face a Manchester City side determined to keep pace with Arsenal in the title race.
