Paris Saint Germain’s emphatic victory sends another warning to the rest of Europe, with Luis Enrique's side maintaining their perfect start to the Champions League campaign.

Even without several key players, the reigning champions showed great depth and attacking quality that makes them such a formidable opponent, while Villarreal are left to reflect on a night they’d like to forget.

Luis Enrique's side flew out of the blocks, scoring four goals inside 17 minutes to stun the hosts.

João Neves, Désiré Doué, Senny Mayulu and Fabián Ruiz all scored inside the opening 17 minutes, with Ruiz adding a second after the break.

David Boly rounded off the victory late on as the champions moved to a perfect 12 points.

Villarreal had scored eight goals across their first three Champions League games, but failed to find the net for the first time tonight.

It was a defensive collapse that became Villarreal's heaviest home defeat in Champions League history.

By contrast, PSG's four goals in 17 minutes is the fastest by any club in Champions League history.

Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute, drilling in from close range after Villarreal failed to clear a corner.

Doué doubled the lead three minutes later after a poor pass out from the back by goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi.

He has now scored in three straight Champions League appearances and has also provided two assists, making a direct contribution in every game so far.

A minute after that, PSG won the ball high up the pitch and Mayulu drove past Gulácsi. Ruiz then made it four in the 17th minute, finishing inside the near post.

Ruiz added his second five minutes after the restart, brushing off his marker before beating Gulácsi again.

Villarreal barely threatened after that, with most of their efforts coming from distance, including an Alberto Moleiro drive that sailed off target.

This result is a world away from Villarreal's last European outing, when they led Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield before losing 4-3 by full time.

They came into this game following a 1-0 defeat to Espanyol, with Gerard Moreno limping off early and Ilias Akhomach and Nathan Saliba out injured.

PSG, meanwhile, were without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (a season-ending ACL injury), Ousmane Dembélé and Marquinhos, and still scored six.

PSG's next Champions League fixture is a home game against Roma at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday 25 November (20:00 GMT).

Villarreal's next Champions League fixture is an away trip to Slavia Prague at the Fortuna Arena on the same day (17:45 GMT).
