Tottenham vs Newcastle Preview: Spurs’ Home Struggles Meet Newcastle’s Away Woes

Tottenham Hotspur’s dismal home record shows no signs of improving. Spurs have managed just two home wins all season and are without a Premier League victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since early December. They now welcome Newcastle United on Tuesday night, desperate to end a growing winless run after Saturday’s damaging 3–2 home defeat to Brentford.

Spurs saw red in more ways than one at the weekend. Cristian Romero was dismissed in the first half for a reckless challenge on Casemiro during their 2–0 loss to Manchester United, a moment that proved decisive. That defeat extended Tottenham’s winless league run to seven matches, leaving Thomas Frank under intense pressure as fears of being dragged into a relegation scrap grow louder.

Newcastle, meanwhile, arrive in north London following a difficult spell of their own. An unexpected defeat to Brentford at the weekend capped a miserable week that also included an EFL Cup exit to Manchester City and a heavy 4–1 loss at Anfield. Eddie Howe’s side continue to struggle away from home, with just two away league wins all season, coming against Everton and Burnley.

However, this fixture may represent an opportunity for Newcastle to finally address those away struggles. Tottenham’s poor home form offers encouragement, particularly with Spurs looking vulnerable defensively and lacking confidence.

Both Eddie Howe and Thomas Frank find themselves under scrutiny. With league form faltering, ambitions of securing a Champions League place next season are rapidly fading, despite both clubs still competing in Europe. Spurs have slipped to 15th in the table and urgently need a response ahead of a daunting North London Derby against Arsenal next weekend. Newcastle, meanwhile, face another stern test away to Manchester City shortly after this clash.

Historically, this fixture delivers goals. Tottenham vs Newcastle ranks among the Premier League’s highest-scoring match-ups, sitting third overall for total goals scored. Combine Spurs’ defensive issues at home with Newcastle’s vulnerability on the road, and Tuesday night promises to be open and entertaining.

Head-to-Head Record

The sides have already met twice this season, both at St James’ Park. Romero’s dramatic 96th-minute bicycle kick secured a 2–2 draw in the league, while Newcastle claimed a comfortable 2–0 win in the EFL Cup.

Tottenham have failed to beat Newcastle in their last five meetings across all competitions (1 draw, 4 defeats). However, their home record against the Magpies is more encouraging, with their most recent home victory coming two seasons ago. Given current form, a draw appears a realistic outcome.

Team News

Tottenham’s injury problems continue to mount. Destiny Udogie was forced off at Old Trafford, while Romero now faces a four-match suspension following his second red card of the season. Full-backs Djed Spence and Pedro Porro remain sidelined, leaving Archie Gray and new signing Souza as likely options at full-back.

An injury to Kevin Danso further complicates matters, meaning Radu Dragusin, recently back from a long lay-off, is expected to partner Micky van de Ven, who is likely to resume captaincy duties.

Newcastle are hopeful of welcoming back Lewis Miley and Anthony Gordon, though Tuesday may come too soon. Captain Bruno Guimarães recently returned from injury and marked his comeback with a goal.

Long-term absentees include Fabian Schär, Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth, while Joelinton is nearing a return. Yoane Wissa continues his recovery, leaving a decision between him and Nick Woltemade to lead the line.

Predicted Line-ups

Tottenham Hotspur: Vicario, Gray, Dragusin, Van de Ven, Souza, Gallagher, Palhinha, Sarr, Odobert, Xavi Simons, Solanke

Newcastle United: Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Tonali, Guimarães, Willock, Murphy, Woltemade, Barnes
