Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 2-2 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as a late strike from Georginio Rutter extended Spurs’ run without a win.
Spurs hosted Brighton needing a victory to lift themselves out of the bottom three, while the visitors were targeting a move into sixth place.
Xavi Simons was decisive, producing a man-of-the-match performance with a goal and an assist in a crucial fixture for the Lilywhites.
The North London side began the match as the stronger team, with Yves Bissouma and Conor Gallagher pressing aggressively, while the wingers looked to create chances for Dominic Solanke.
For Brighton, their clearest chance came in the 32nd minute from a free-kick. A header by Jack Hinshelwood was squared across goal, hitting the post and rebounding off Micky van de Ven staying out by inches.
Spurs responded strongly.
Some neat passing between Solanke and Simons allowed the Dutchman to turn and pick out a run from Pedro Porro, who finished to open the scoring.

Spurs continued to push, launching an incisive counterattack with Simons at the centre of everything positive. He struck the post before Porro followed up with a powerful effort, which Bart Verbruggen tipped over the bar to keep Brighton in the game.
Before half-time, Brighton found their equaliser.
A beautifully weighted cross from Pascal Groß was met by a thunderous volley from Kaoru Mitoma on his weaker foot, silencing the home crowd.

The second half was largely quieter until the introduction of Lucas Bergvall.
The youngster hunted down Jan Paul van Hecke to win possession and released Simons, who unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner, sending the home crowd into jubilation.
Could Spurs finally hold on?
Then came the heartbreak.
A long ball found Van Hecke, temporarily deployed as a striker. Kevin Danso initially intercepted but lost possession, allowing Van Hecke to square the ball to Rutter.
Rutter made no mistake, firing home to silence the stadium once again.
Simons was left in tears. Danso looked devastated.
Was there one final chance?
A late move saw Solanke link up once more with Simons, who slipped in Archie Gray, but his effort was saved.
Full-time.
Spurs remain in the bottom three. Brighton stay ninth.
Hearts broken in a must-win game but there are signs of improvement in Spurs’ performance.
Tottenham now travel to face Wolverhampton Wanderers, who could be relegated if they fail to win.
Surely Spurs must win… or will they condemn themselves further?
Brighton will be satisfied with a point, but may feel it is an opportunity missed in the race for European football.
