Tottenham Hotspur made it eight games without a win after suffering a 2–1 defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday night, extending their worrying Premier League slump.
The loss also means Spurs have now gone six home league matches without a victory, further increasing pressure on Thomas Frank and his depleted squad.
Spurs headed into the clash sitting just six points clear of the relegation zone, having picked up only two wins from their last 16 Premier League matches. Injury problems continued to mount, with Tottenham forced to play without eleven first-team players, including captain Cristian Romero, following his red card against Manchester United.
Like Spurs, Newcastle have endured an inconsistent campaign and came into the match placed 12th, with only two league wins since the turn of the year. Both sides were hoping for a different outcome to the reverse fixture earlier in the season, which ended in a 2–2 draw.

The Magpies started the game on the front foot, creating several early chances and asserting control. Their dominance continued throughout the opening quarter, as they enjoyed over 60% possession and won seven corners while Spurs failed to register any.
Tottenham’s injury woes worsened in the 30th minute when Wilson Odobert was forced off after a failed tackle on Harvey Barnes, leaving the Frenchman grounded with what appeared to be a knee injury.
The home crowd thought the worst had arrived in the 44th minute when Joe Willock was played through with a perfectly weighted pass. Willock drove into the box and curled a composed finish past Guglielmo Vicario, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.

That brief relief lasted only moments. From the resulting pressure, Malick Thiaw gave Newcastle the lead.

Willock’s cross caused chaos in the box, and although Thiaw’s initial effort was saved, he reacted quickest to poke home the rebound.
Newcastle went into half-time with a deserved 1–0 lead.

The visitors continued to apply pressure after the break, forcing multiple corners and keeping Spurs pinned back. Tottenham’s season was summed up in the 52nd minute when Archie Gray found space down the right and cut the ball back to Mathys Tel, who completely mis-hit his shot and sent it over the bar.
Spurs finally found some fortune in the 64th minute, equalising from their first corner of the match. A deep delivery to the back post was guided across goal by Micky van de Ven, with Gray arriving to convert from close range.
Any hope of a comeback was short-lived. Just three minutes later, Anthony Gordon burst into the box and picked out Jacob Ramsey, who swept a first-time finish past Vicario to restore Newcastle’s lead.
Van de Ven briefly threatened an equaliser with a first-time volley from the edge of the box, but the Dutchman failed to keep his effort down.
After a chaotic spell midway through the second half, Newcastle saw the game out to secure their first Premier League win since beating Leeds United in the opening week of 2026. The victory lifts Eddie Howe’s side back into the top ten and reignites their hopes of European qualification.
For Tottenham, the defeat leaves them just three points above the relegation zone with twelve games remaining, as their winless run continues to cast a long shadow over the remainder of the season.
