Tottenham Hotspur’s fight for survival suffered another blow as they fell to a 1-0 defeat away at Sunderland AFC, extending their winless Premier League run to 14 games.

Spurs headed into the game having not claimed victory in their last 13 league matches. This poor form left the North London side in the relegation zone and in desperate need of a win.

The Black Cats, meanwhile, were hoping to build on momentum following their 2-1 derby victory against Newcastle United, despite having won just three of their last ten league games.

Spurs caused an early scare within the opening minutes when Dominic Solanke played the ball across the box towards Lucas Bergvall. However, the Swede couldn’t get a touch, letting the hosts off the hook.

A beautifully weighted ball from Enzo Le Fée then caused problems for Cristian Romero, who failed to clear his lines. The ball nearly fell to Brian Brobbey, but Antonín Kinský reacted quickly to collect.

Brobbey had another opportunity moments later, meeting Le Fée’s cross, but the Dutchman couldn’t keep his header down.

A controversial moment followed when referee Rob Jones awarded a penalty for a challenge on Randal Kolo Muani involving Omar Alderete and Luke O’Nien. However, VAR intervened and the decision was overturned.

Sunderland continued to threaten from set pieces. In the 27th minute, Nordi Mukiele found himself free at the back post but failed to make proper contact.

Granit Xhaka came close with a volley from the edge of the box, narrowly missing the target after a poor clearance.

The hosts maintained pressure towards the end of the first half, with Kinský producing an excellent save to deny Brobbey from close range.

Spurs responded before the break when a poor clearance from Alderete allowed Solanke a shot on goal, but Robin Roefs made a strong save to keep things level.

Sunderland took the lead in the 60th minute in fortunate circumstances.

Mukiele drove forward and struck from distance, with the effort deflecting off Micky van de Ven and wrong-footing the goalkeeper before finding the net.

The goal shifted momentum firmly in Sunderland’s favour, as they continued to apply pressure and dominate large spells of the game.

They nearly doubled their lead in the 88th minute when a ball from Noah Sadiki beat Kinský, but Destiny Udogie cleared calmly.

Despite late pressure from Spurs, it proved too little, too late. Sunderland held on for a 1-0 victory, extending Spurs’ winless run to 14 games and leaving them two points from safety.

With only six games remaining in the Premier League season, the threat of relegation is becoming an increasingly real possibility for Tottenham Hotspur.
