Premier League Preview: Crystal Palace v Newcastle United

This weekend, two teams that have had very different seasons will square off in South London as Newcastle United attempt to stabilise a faltering campaign against a Crystal Palace team that has been unexpectedly energised by European success.

This one starts off with a distinctly different mood. Palace are well-positioned for a semi-final after defeating ACF Fiorentina 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League quarter-final.

Newcastle, on the other hand, have had time to reflect on what may have been their worst loss of the season: a 2-1 home setback to rivals Sunderland shortly before the international break, which highlighted their inconsistent play and damaged their confidence.

The reverse meeting earlier this season went the way of Newcastle, who secured a 2-0 win at St James’ Park thanks largely to set-piece efficiency.

That game exposed Palace vulnerabilities defensively, particularly from dead-ball situations something Oliver Glasner’s side will be keen to address here.

This game may hinge less on tactics and more on priorities.

Palace are still balancing Premier League ambitions with what is now a genuine opportunity in Europe. Their dominant first-leg win over Fiorentina gives them breathing room but also presents a dilemma.

With a semi-final within reach, Glasner may choose to rotate or manage minutes to keep key players fresh for the return leg in Florence.

That could mean opportunities for squad players, or at least a slightly reduced intensity compared to Thursday night.

Newcastle, by contrast, have no such distraction.

Their season is in danger of drifting, and with injuries still biting particularly in defence and midfield this becomes a must-respond fixture for Eddie Howe’s side.

Current Form

Crystal Palace (all competitions):

L – W – D – D – W – W

Palace have been inconsistent domestically but are now unbeaten in five at Selhurst Park in all competitions, keeping clean sheets in each.

Newcastle United (all competitions):

W – L – D – W – L – L

Eddie Howe’s side have lost six of their last nine league matches, highlighting a slide that has dragged them into the bottom half.

Key Factors

  • Fatigue vs freshness: Palace played midweek; Newcastle have had time to reset.

  • European distraction: Palace may prioritise the Conference League with one foot in the semi-finals.

  • Newcastle’s fragility: The Sunderland defeat still lingers both psychologically and in terms of league position.

  • Goals likely: Newcastle have scored in nine straight away games but rarely keep clean sheets.
