Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa: Manzambi header earns Villa crucial win at St James’ Park

Aston Villa claimed a valuable 1-0 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday evening, with Johan Manzambi’s first-half header separating the sides in a game that saw the hosts struggle to make their chances count.
Manzambi struck in the 36th minute after meeting João Gomes’ cross, punishing Newcastle for leaving him unmarked inside the box and handing Unai Emery’s side a lead they would not surrender.
Newcastle finished the game without a goal despite having opportunities to get back into it, while Sven Botman was fortunate to escape a red card in the first half after a VAR review of his challenge on Nicolas Jackson.
The hosts made a lively start, but Villa soon found ways to exploit the space behind Newcastle’s defence.
Jackson had an early opportunity on the counter-attack, although his effort lacked the direction to trouble goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček.
The match became heated in the opening 20 minutes, with Joelinton and Botman both booked following reckless challenges.
Botman’s afternoon could have taken a very different turn when the referee reviewed his tackle on Jackson, but the yellow card remained after the check.
Villa made Newcastle pay for their defensive lapse in the 36th minute.
Gomes delivered an excellent cross into the box, where Manzambi had slipped away from his marker before powering a header past Horníček.
The visitors nearly doubled their lead before the break when Emiliano Buendía struck the inside of the post, with the ball rebounding off Horníček before Newcastle managed to clear the danger.
Newcastle needed a response after half-time, and Botman almost provided one within minutes of the restart.
His powerful effort forced an outstanding save from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who stretched to keep the ball out and preserve his side’s advantage.
Harvey Barnes then sent a dangerous cross narrowly wide as Newcastle tried to build momentum, but clear chances remained difficult to come by.
Villa continued to look threatening on the break, forcing the hosts to balance their search for an equaliser with the need to avoid conceding again.
Newcastle pushed forward in the closing stages, with Yoane Wissa among those looking for a breakthrough, but Villa dealt with the pressure and saw out the win.
The result gives Villa consecutive Premier League away victories at Newcastle for the first time since the 1957-58 season, while Emery also recorded his 100th Premier League win as a manager.
The defeat leaves Newcastle 11th in the Premier League table, with Matthias Jaissle's side needing to find a response when they travel to face Crystal Palace next weekend.
Their inability to turn chances into goals will be a concern, particularly after finishing this game without finding the net.
Villa sit just one place below Newcastle in 12th, but their next fixture presents a tougher test as they prepare to face league leaders Manchester City.
Unai Emery will hope his side can build on this victory and carry the confidence from their win at St James’ Park into their next challenge.
