Mikel Arteta has insisted that Arsenal must remain fully focused on Sunderland this weekend, despite the opportunity to strengthen their lead at the top of the Premier League.
Speaking at the Sobha Realty Training Centre on Friday, the Arsenal manager played down suggestions that Saturday’s fixture could represent a major title statement, stressing instead the importance of consistency.
“Another opportunity to win, to be better than the opposition and earn the right to win the game,” Arteta said. “It’s going to be a really tough match.”
With Arsenal able to move nine points clear, Arteta was keen to shift attention away from the league table and towards the challenge posed by their opponents, who held his side to a 2-2 draw earlier in the campaign.
“They are extremely competitive, really well coached and have very good individuals,” he added. “We know what to expect, but we need to deliver.”
The manager also provided encouraging updates on his injury list, revealing that both Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard are edging closer to a return.
“His hip is getting much better,” Arteta said of Saka. “Hopefully very soon he will be with us” he also touched on Ødegaard “Martin is getting better. It will be a matter of days.”
However, Mikel Merino is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a rare injury.
“It’s a big blow,” Arteta admitted. “He’s going to be out for four months.”
Arteta also reflected on the positive momentum generated by Arsenal’s midweek EFL Cup victory over Chelsea, which secured a place in the final at Wembley.
“The energy that it brings is incredible,” he said. “You could feel the excitement around the supporters.”
He urged fans to play their part as well, calling for a strong atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium as the season enters a decisive phase.
“We want the best atmosphere we’ve seen,” Arteta said. “Every game matters now.”
When asked whether it feels different leading the title race rather than chasing, Arteta offered a measured response.
“Depends,” he said. “We’ve been in both positions. You just have to focus on what you have to do every day. In May, we will see what is better.”
With key players close to returning and confidence high following recent results, Arsenal approach Saturday’s clash in strong shape. Yet Arteta’s message was clear: maintaining focus remains the club’s top priority.
