Manchester United ended a decade-long wait for a league win at Anfield with a 2–1 victory over Liverpool a result that marks a major moment in Rúben Amorim’s tenure and piles further pressure on Arne Slot’s struggling side.

It was United’s first Premier League triumph at Anfield since 2016, closing the gap between the two rivals to just two points and pushing Liverpool down to fourth in the table.

The visitors struck first just over a minute into the game, with Bryan Mbeumo finishing neatly after a pass from Amad Diallo, chipping the ball over the Liverpool goalkeeper. The goal came with some controversy, as moments earlier Alexis Mac Allister had collided with his own captain, Virgil van Dijk, suffering a head injury. Play was not stopped, and the goal came seconds later. Mac Allister continued after treatment, wearing protective headgear for the rest of the match. It was Mbeumo’s second Premier League goal of the season and the second-fastest goal in this fixture’s 130-year history.

The first half saw chances at both ends, though Liverpool looked uncharacteristically flat for such a high-stakes match. Cody Gakpo was their brightest attacking threat, hitting the post three times before finally equalising in the 78th minute.

Arne Slot’s team showed more urgency after he made four substitutions just after the hour mark, but for much of the game, Liverpool lacked the intensity and control that have defined them in recent seasons.

Manchester United, meanwhile, stayed composed and continued to threaten on the counter. Their persistence paid off in the 84th minute when Bruno Fernandes volleyed in a pinpoint cross that found Harry Maguire, who headed home the winner into the bottom corner.

United held firm in the closing stages to secure a crucial victory their first league win at Anfield since 2016.

For Liverpool, it was a damaging result and their first Premier League home defeat since losing to Nottingham Forest last September. It also marked their first loss in any competition at Anfield since March, when PSG beat them in Europe. Slot’s side now appear to be in their toughest spell since his arrival, struggling to keep possession, press effectively, or show a clear identity.

For Rúben Amorim, this was a statement win a highlight of his tenure and a sign that United may finally be finding some direction. For Liverpool, the concern grows deeper: it is now four losses in a row. The defending champions, once known for their late heroics, are now faltering under pressure, their early-season fortune replaced by familiar and costly lapses.
