Manchester United moved three points clear of Aston Villa in the race for Champions League football after a 3–1 victory at Old Trafford.
The game burst into life after a stale first half, when Casemiro’s set-piece opener sparked a chaotic spell that saw Ross Barkley briefly equalise for Villa.
Goals from Matheus Cunha and substitute Benjamin Šeško then secured victory for Michael Carrick’s resurgent side, with captain Bruno Fernandes once again at the heart of a convincing United performance.

The opening stages were cautious and subdued, perhaps reflecting Villa’s fatigue following their midweek European trip, United’s recent lack of conviction, and the high stakes surrounding the contest.
While the match lacked end-to-end intensity, Manchester United held the better grip on proceedings, though they appeared short of a central attacking presence with Šeško left on the bench and Bryan Mbeumo leading the line.
The best chance of the half came from an unlikely aerial source when Amad Diallo produced a looping header that forced an excellent diving save from Emiliano MartÃnez.
United also threatened when Bruno Fernandes clipped a precise pass over the top to Diogo Dalot. The full-back’s inverted run allowed him to shift onto his left foot, but he blazed his effort over the bar.
Despite United controlling possession (55–45), the contest lacked the tempo required to produce a breakthrough and the first half ended goalless.
The second half resumed with greater urgency from United.
Their breakthrough arrived in the 53rd minute, once again from a familiar source this season a set piece.
Casemiro rose highest to glance home Bruno Fernandes’ near-post corner, scoring his seventh Premier League goal of the campaign and his sixth from a set piece two more than any other player in the league.

The goal breathed life into the contest, and Aston Villa responded with renewed intensity.
Goalkeeper Lammens was forced into meaningful action for the first time, producing a sharp close-range stop to deny Amadou Onana as United began to retreat after taking the lead.
Villa’s pressure quickly told.
From the resulting corner, Ross Barkley fired home at the back post after being left unmarked.

The goal was not without controversy. There were appeals for a possible handball in the build-up and questions over whether the offside-positioned Onana had made contact with the ball, but VAR allowed the goal to stand.
Replays later appeared to show Onana acknowledging the touch, perhaps even claiming the goal himself.
Just as Villa looked capable of turning the contest, United struck again.
Bruno Fernandes claimed his 16th assist of the season, threading a perfectly weighted pass for Matheus Cunha, who swept a composed finish beyond MartÃnez into the far corner in Thierry Henry-like fashion.
While Villa searched for another response, United extended their lead almost immediately.
Substitute Benjamin Šeško, introduced only six minutes earlier, scored with his first touch, making it seven goals in nine games, five of which have come from the bench.

It was a classic poacher’s finish as he reacted quickest to loose possession inside the box, with a deflection leaving MartÃnez helpless.
Šeško almost had another moments later when Fernandes played him through again, but the striker chose to square the ball to Diallo rather than shoot himself.
The move broke down, denying Fernandes what would have been a hat-trick of assists.
However, Fernandes had already broken a Manchester United record, surpassing David Beckham’s tally of 15 assists in a single Premier League season.
He now remains just four assists shy of the Premier League single-season record of 20, jointly held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
United Momentum Continues
The closing stages became comfortable for United, although Villa should have found a consolation.
Tammy Abraham squared a pass across goal, but Douglas Luiz and Andrés GarcÃa collided, preventing what looked like a certain tap-in.
It capped off a disappointing and fatigued Villa performance.
The result highlights the dramatic shift in momentum between the two clubs in recent weeks.
Before Michael Carrick took charge eight league games ago, Villa sat on 43 points, level with Manchester City and just six behind Arsenal.
United were 11 points behind Villa in seventh place.
Since then the form of the two clubs has dramatically reversed.

United now sit on 54 points, three clear of Aston Villa, with Carrick’s side producing the strongest run of form in the league over the last eight matches.
Villa’s recent slide leaves them vulnerable to the chasing pack, with Chelsea and Liverpool both just three points behind.
For Unai Emery’s side, their demanding Europa League campaign appears to be stretching resources, while United’s lighter schedule has allowed Carrick’s team to focus entirely on securing Champions League qualification.
A target that now looks firmly within reach.
