Manchester United claimed a statement victory in the Premier League as they defeated Manchester City 2–0 at Old Trafford, giving Michael Carrick the new-manager bounce he craved in the Manchester derby. Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu sealed an impressive win that further dented City’s fading title hopes and lifted United into the top four, at least temporarily.

Carrick, back in the dugout for a second spell after his brief caretaker stint in 2021, insisted in the build-up that Old Trafford had not lost its aura. His side responded with a performance full of energy, control and attacking intent.

United started on the front foot and almost struck inside three minutes when Harry Maguire rattled the crossbar from close range. The hosts continued to threaten and twice had the ball in the net during the first half, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes both rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma before tapping home, but both efforts were ruled out. Patrick Dorgu also went close before the break, forcing Donnarumma into a sharp reaction save.

City’s best opportunity of the first half came when Max Alleyne’s header was blocked in quick succession by Senne Lammens and Diogo Dalot, summing up a frustrating afternoon for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute, sparked by a City free-kick that quickly turned into a United counter-attack.

Fernandes released Mbeumo, who calmly rolled his finish across Donnarumma to give the hosts a deserved lead. United doubled their advantage 11 minutes later as Dorgu swept home from Matheus Cunha’s right-wing cross, effectively putting the contest beyond City.

The home side could have added further gloss to the scoreline late on. Amad struck the post after turning Nathan Aké inside out, while Mason Mount became the third United player to see a goal disallowed after converting another Cunha delivery.

United were aggressive, well-organised and confident throughout, pressing City high and transitioning quickly when possession was won. Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 system allowed Fernandes to dictate play while providing freedom to the wide players.

Mbeumo was central to everything positive, deployed as a centre-forward and constantly threatening in transition. Dorgu impressed with his composure and timing, while Fernandes orchestrated proceedings with intelligence and authority.

Defensively, United limited City’s threat effectively, keeping Erling Haaland quiet for long periods and restricting clear-cut chances. City struggled to impose themselves and lacked their usual control in midfield. Guardiola’s side looked vulnerable in defensive transition and were repeatedly exposed by United’s pace on the break.

Haaland was largely isolated, registering just 14 touches across the match, with only two coming inside the United penalty area. Despite seeing plenty of the ball in spells, City failed to turn possession into meaningful opportunities.

Carrick’s setup prioritised compactness without the ball and quick vertical attacks once possession was regained. United were happy to concede territory at times but punished City whenever they overcommitted.

City’s high defensive line proved costly, particularly from set-piece situations where United were able to spring rapid counter-attacks. Guardiola’s side lacked the intensity and structure required to regain control after losing possession, a recurring issue during their recent winless run.

Key Stats & Talking Points

  • Bryan Mbeumo scored his first Premier League goal against Manchester City in his seventh appearance versus them

  • Only Mohamed Salah (8) and Antoine Semenyo (6) have scored more Premier League goals from fast breaks than Mbeumo (5) since last season

  • Pep Guardiola has now suffered 10 defeats against Manchester United his joint-most against any opponent

  • Erling Haaland has now gone seven games without a non-penalty goal, his longest such run in Europe’s top five leagues

The win marks a perfect start to Michael Carrick’s second spell in charge, extending his unbeaten managerial record with United to four matches (W3 D1). United move into the top four and head into their next fixture full of belief.

They face a stern test next as they travel to the Emirates to take on league leaders Arsenal. City, meanwhile, risk falling nine points behind by the end of the weekend and will look to end their four-game winless streak when they travel to Norway to face Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League.
