Manchester City host Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night knowing a victory may be necessary to maintain pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Forest, meanwhile, will be aiming to build on their two-point lead over relegation rivals West Ham.
City talisman Erling Haaland is a doubt for the 19:30 kick-off after missing his side’s 1-0 win away to Leeds on Saturday.
Manchester City have won their last six games in all competitions since a 2-2 draw at Tottenham in February. That was part of an ongoing run of nine games unbeaten since Pep Guardiola’s side lost 3-1 away in Norway against Bodo Glimt in January.
The title hopefuls’ home form is even more impressive, with City having won their last seven matches at the Etihad in all competitions. Guardiola’s side are unbeaten at home since a 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League back in November.
Vitor Pereira appeared to make an instant impact following his appointment as Nottingham Forest manager last month. His side won 3-0 away at Fenerbahce in the Europa League in the Portuguese coach’s first game in charge.
However, three consecutive defeats have left Forest only two points clear of the relegation zone. The visitors have not won any of their last five Premier League fixtures since a 2-0 victory away at Brentford in January.
Head-to-Head Record
Manchester City won 2-1 in the reverse fixture between these sides in December, thanks to goals from Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki.
City also defeated Forest 2-0 at Wembley in an FA Cup semi-final last April, having lost 1-0 away at the City Ground the previous month.
That match remains Nottingham Forest’s only win over City since their promotion back to the Premier League in 2022. The three meetings between the two sides at the Etihad since then have all ended in victories for Manchester City by an aggregate score of 11-0.
Troublingly for Forest supporters, Vitor Pereira has lost all three of his previous meetings against Pep Guardiola, two of which came during his time as Wolves manager. Most recently, an Erling Haaland brace helped City secure a 4-0 victory over Wolves on the opening weekend of this season.
Key Battle: Can Forest’s Defence Contain City’s Attack?
Haaland remains a doubt for Wednesday’s match after missing the win at Leeds due to a knock. If he is available, the Norwegian’s strength and physical presence will undoubtedly pose problems for Forest’s defence.
Haaland currently leads the Premier League Golden Boot race with 22 goals and has registered two goals and three assists in his last four appearances.
Pereira has named the same back four in both of his league games as Forest manager, built around the central defensive partnership of Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic. The pair will likely be tasked with matching Haaland’s physicality should he feature.
Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo has also been in excellent form, scoring six goals and providing two assists in nine starts since joining City from Bournemouth in January.
Guardiola has deployed Semenyo across multiple attacking positions. Should Haaland miss out again, Semenyo may be used in a central attacking role alongside Omar Marmoush, as seen against Leeds. This would test the pace of Forest’s defenders rather than their ability to deal with Haaland’s aerial power.
What It Means
Arsenal’s trip to Brighton will kick off at the same time as Manchester City vs Nottingham Forest. The gap between the title rivals currently stands at five points, with City holding a game in hand.
City will be aiming to at least match Arsenal’s results across the next three league games and win their game in hand at home to Crystal Palace. That scenario would reduce the gap to three points before the two title contenders meet at the Etihad in April.
Nottingham Forest supporters may also be closely monitoring other fixtures. A defeat could see Forest fall into the relegation zone if West Ham win away at Fulham.
However, a Forest victory would see them leapfrog Tottenham into 16th place ahead of Spurs’ match against Crystal Palace on Thursday.
Prediction
Nottingham Forest performed well in Pereira’s opening games as manager but struggled in their recent defeat away at Brighton.
Manchester City should have too much attacking quality for the visitors to handle, with or without Erling Haaland.
Prediction: Manchester City 3-0 Nottingham Forest
