Manchester City need victory to keep pace with league leaders Arsenal as they prepare to host Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium.
Five points separate City from the top of the Premier League table heading into the clash.
Anything less than a win for Pep Guardiola’s side would leave Arsenal needing just one victory from their final two games to be crowned champions.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, also require a positive result to keep their slim hopes of qualifying for European football through the league alive.
Form Guide
City responded strongly after dropping points away to Everton by securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday.
That result extended Guardiola’s side’s unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions and 13 league games since their 2-0 defeat to local rivals Manchester United in January.
Palace, meanwhile, followed up their huge UEFA Conference League semi-final victory against Shakhtar Donetsk with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Everton on Sunday.
Despite their impressive European run, the Eagles have struggled for consistency domestically, recording two draws and two defeats in their last four Premier League matches.
Should Palace manage to win on Wednesday night, it would become only the second home league defeat suffered by Manchester City this season.
City have won their last three home matches in all competitions and remain unbeaten at the Etihad in the Premier League since a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in their opening home league game of the campaign last August.
Palace have lost their last two away league matches against Liverpool and AFC Bournemouth, although they did claim a superb 3-1 victory over Shakhtar in Krakow during the first leg of their European semi-final.
Head-to-Head
Crystal Palace’s only victory in their last nine meetings against Manchester City came in last season’s FA Cup final, when Eberechi Eze scored the decisive goal to secure Palace’s first-ever major trophy.
City comfortably defeated Palace earlier this season at Selhurst Park.
A brace from Premier League top scorer Erling Haaland, alongside a goal from Phil Foden, guided Guardiola’s side to a 3-0 victory.
City are also unbeaten in their last three home games against Palace, including last season’s dramatic 5-2 comeback victory after trailing 2-0.
Key Battle: Can City Contain Mateta?
Jean-Philippe Mateta transformed Palace’s attack after replacing Jorgen Strand Larsen against Everton on Sunday.
The French striker scored Palace’s second equaliser and caused constant problems for Everton’s centre-backs throughout the final 30 minutes.
His physical presence opened space for teammates such as Ismaila Sarr and Brennan Johnson, allowing Palace to create several dangerous late opportunities.
Manchester City’s defence dealt effectively with Brentford striker Igor Thiago at the weekend another forward who thrives physically and excels at holding up the ball.
However, City experienced far greater difficulties against Everton’s Thierno Barry, who scored twice during a chaotic 14-minute spell that severely damaged City’s title hopes.
Mateta will undoubtedly feel encouraged by Barry’s success.
Abdukodir Khusanov was omitted from City’s squad against Brentford, with Nathan Ake returning to the starting lineup for his first Premier League start since January’s derby defeat to Manchester United.
Cup-winning Palace captain Marc Guehi will also relish the opportunity to face his former club following his move to Manchester City earlier this year.
What It Means
The Premier League title race remains out of Manchester City’s hands following Arsenal’s dramatic late victory against West Ham on Sunday.
Guardiola’s side sit five points behind the Gunners, albeit with a game in hand.
A City victory would increase pressure on Arsenal ahead of their final two fixtures against Burnley and Crystal Palace.
If City fail to win, Arsenal would secure the title with victory over Burnley on Monday night.
West Ham’s defeat also ensured Crystal Palace are now mathematically safe from relegation.
The Eagles realistically need at least a point against City to maintain any outside hope of European qualification through the league.
However, Palace’s most likely route into Europe may come through the UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27th, with the winners securing a Europa League place regardless of league position.
Prediction
Both teams could be affected by fatigue following demanding weekend fixtures, while attention may also drift towards upcoming cup finals with City set to face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
Palace undoubtedly pose a serious threat, but City’s superior attacking quality particularly with Jeremy Doku in excellent form should ultimately prove decisive.
Prediction:
Manchester City 2-1 Crystal Palace
