Manchester City face Arsenal in the biggest game of the season a potential Premier League title-deciding clash as City look to close the gap to three points on the Gunners.
The biggest game of the Premier League season is upon us, with a title decider taking place on Sunday afternoon at the Etihad, where league leaders Arsenal FC travel to face Manchester City.
The league title won’t be decided officially on April 19, but it will paint a clearer picture of who could be crowned champions in May. If the Gunners prevail, they could establish another nine-point lead over their title rivals a gap that would surely be insurmountable with just five games to go.
However, if the Citizens repeat their Carabao Cup final victory over Mikel Arteta’s side, they will firmly put themselves in the driving seat to win the Premier League title, despite not leapfrogging Arsenal immediately.
City still have a game in hand and could draw level on points with the Gunners if they win. Victory would give Pep Guardiola with his experience in title run-ins the confidence to push on and secure another league title. In contrast, defeat for Mikel Arteta could see Arsenal stumble at the final hurdle.
Arsenal progressed into the Champions League semi-finals during the week, edging past Sporting CP with a 1–0 aggregate win after a goalless second leg.
However, performances have dipped. The Gunners lost the League Cup final to Sunday’s opponents and suffered a disappointing FA Cup exit to Southampton FC.
Last weekend, AFC Bournemouth dented Arsenal’s title run with a 2–1 win at the Emirates, while City responded with a dominant 3–0 victory over Chelsea FC to close the gap to six points.
Arsenal appear to be running out of steam, with just one win in five games across all competitions. Goals have dried up, with set-pieces and penalties becoming their primary route to goal.
In contrast, Manchester City are peaking at the perfect time.
After a difficult spell including Champions League defeats to Real Madrid three consecutive victories have reignited their title push.
The Carabao Cup win over Arsenal reinforced their dominance, while a 4–0 FA Cup victory against Liverpool FC and the recent win over Chelsea underline their momentum.
City have scored nine goals in their last three matches while keeping three clean sheets compared to Arsenal’s two goals in their last five.
Pep Guardiola’s side sense opportunity and are capitalising on Arsenal’s dip in form.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
It’s not all negative for Arsenal.
Before the Carabao Cup final defeat, the Gunners were unbeaten in five Premier League matches against Manchester City a major turnaround after previously losing 12 consecutive games.
However, Nico O’Reilly’s late double in March secured City their first trophy of the season and shifted momentum once again.
Last season, Arsenal dominated this fixture, including a 5–1 win at the Emirates. They also pushed City close in earlier meetings, showing they can compete at the highest level.
TEAM NEWS
Manchester City remain without key defenders, including Rúben Dias, Joško Gvardiol, and John Stones. However, January signing Marc Guéhi has stepped up impressively, while Abdukodir Khusanov has also performed well.
Rayan Cherki is expected to start again after strong recent performances, contributing three assists in his last two matches.
For Arsenal, Bukayo Saka has been ruled out. Noni Madueke remains a doubt, which could open the door for 16-year-old Max Dowman.
Further concerns include Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber, and Martin Ødegaard, who are all doubts. Mikel Merino is also unavailable.
