Manchester City moved within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal after a dominant 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium.

The result keeps Pep Guardiola’s side firmly in the title race while ending Palace’s hopes of qualifying for European football through the league.

City’s Second String Secure the Points

City manager Pep Guardiola made six changes to his starting XI from the side that beat Brentford 3-0 last weekend, with one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Key players including Erling Haaland and the in-form Jeremy Doku were rested ahead of the Wembley clash.

It was a moment of brilliance from Phil Foden making his first Premier League start in seven games that unlocked the Palace defence.

Foden’s inventive backheel released Antoine Semenyo, who opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark.

The England international then picked up his second assist of the night eight minutes later, controlling a cross before setting up Omar Marmoush to double City’s advantage.

Foden was narrowly denied a hat-trick of assists shortly before half-time when Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson produced a fingertip save to deny Josko Gvardiol.

City survived a brief spell of pressure from Palace shortly after the hour mark.

Substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen saw an effort deflected, while Ismaila Sarr forced a save from City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Savinho sealed the victory with six minutes remaining, racing onto a through ball from substitute Rayan Cherki before calmly slotting past Henderson.

Quiet Night for Palace Forwards

Crystal Palace’s domestic form has dipped as focus has shifted towards their UEFA Conference League campaign.

Oliver Glasner’s side are now winless in their last five league matches and have failed to score in three of those games.

Palace started brightly and nearly took an early lead when Yeremy Pino tested Donnarumma in the 12th minute before defender Chris Richards headed over from the resulting corner.

City gradually took control, however, forcing Palace deeper as Savinho and Rayan Ait-Nouri increasingly influenced the game from wide areas.

Palace top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta was isolated for large periods and was replaced by Strand Larsen after the hour mark.

Midfielder Will Hughes operated in a deeper role throughout the first half and made several important defensive contributions, including blocking a strike from City captain Bernardo Silva.

However, deploying Hughes deeper reduced Palace’s creativity, with City full-backs Gvardiol and Matheus Nunes comfortably containing the threats posed by Pino and Brennan Johnson.

Player of the Match: Phil Foden

This has been a difficult season at times for Foden, who had not scored in the Premier League since netting against Palace at Selhurst Park in December.

However, his link-up play throughout the evening was exceptional.

His creativity and movement helped unlock a Palace side that had initially looked organised and compact.

The first-half goals from Semenyo and Marmoush both assisted by Foden settled City and removed much of the tension surrounding a potentially difficult night.

With several key players rested, Foden’s performance proved crucial in securing a comfortable victory.

What’s Next?

Manchester City now turn their attention towards Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley, where Guardiola’s side will aim to secure their second domestic trophy of the campaign.

City remain in contention for a domestic treble but will almost certainly need to win their final two Premier League matches and hope Arsenal drop points in order to retain the title.

Arsenal host Burnley on Monday night, while City travel to AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday.

Crystal Palace next travel to Brentford before hosting Arsenal on the final day of the season.
