Manchester City 0-1 Brighton; Seagulls gain revenge at the Etihad

Yasin Ayari's early goal moved Brighton to within two points of the Premier League summit as Fabian Hürzeler's side defeated Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad.
The result condemned City to a second consecutive league defeat, while Brighton continued their impressive start to the season with another statement victory.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Enzo Maresca's side couldn't break down a disciplined Brighton defence as the visitors immediately avenged their Carabao Cup exit earlier in the week.
After losing to City on penalties just three days earlier, Brighton started brightly and struck within the opening 10 minutes.
A low ball flashed across the six-yard box towards Maxim De Cuyper, but Matheus Nunes missed his attempted clearance.
The loose ball eventually fell kindly for Ayari, who made no mistake from close range to hand the visitors an early advantage.
The goal suited Brighton's game plan perfectly.
City dominated possession for much of the opening half but struggled to carve out clear-cut chances against a compact, organised Brighton backline.
Erling Haaland, restored to the starting XI after being rested during the midweek cup tie, found himself largely isolated during the opening stages.
The hosts' best first-half chance fell to Iliman Ndiaye.
Elliot Anderson delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, but Ndiaye's header drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Jeremy Doku looked City's brightest attacking outlet before the interval, repeatedly driving at defenders and forcing Bart Verbruggen into action.
Lewis Dunk also produced an outstanding block to deny Haaland shortly before half-time as Brighton protected their lead.
It was a tactical triumph. They did everything Hürzeler asked.
Brighton almost doubled their advantage within minutes of the restart.
De Cuyper found space again but fired over when a second goal looked likely.
The missed opportunity handed City hope and prompted Maresca to make changes.
The introduction of Rayan Cherki brought greater creativity and attacking urgency to the home side.
City's attacks became more frequent as they pushed Brighton towards their own penalty area for prolonged spells.
Nunes forced another save from Verbruggen, while Cherki continually searched for gaps in Brighton's defensive structure.
City's closest came when substitute Nico O'Reilly produced a brilliant pass for Ndiaye.
The forward struck the crossbar with what proved to be City's clearest opportunity of the game.
Brighton, though, remained resilient, and their determined defending met every attack, with one of the meanest defences in the Premier League, having conceded only seven goals, behind the Champions Arsenal with five.
While Verbruggen continued his impressive evening whenever called upon.
The Seagulls nearly sealed victory on the counter-attack when Georginio Rutter burst forward and tried to tee up a teammate, but City recovered at the last moment.
As the clock counted down, City threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser.
Brighton held firm, and the final whistle confirmed a memorable victory.
What a triumph for Hürzeler and his young team.
The victory moves Brighton within two points of Manchester City and Arsenal and strengthens their claim as genuine contenders for the European places.
Three days after cup heartbreak at the same venue, Brighton returned to the Etihad and delivered the perfect response.
