Liverpool vs Chelsea Preview: Reds Look to Take Huge Step Towards Champions League Qualification

The pressure surrounding Liverpool FC may have intensified following last weekend’s painful defeat to Manchester United, but Saturday’s clash against Chelsea FC at Anfield still presents a huge opportunity for Arne Slot’s side to all but secure a return to the UEFA Champions League.

Just a few weeks ago, the race for the Premier League’s top five looked set to go down to the final day. However, recent results have dramatically shifted the picture. Liverpool and Aston Villa are now overwhelming favourites to secure the remaining qualification spots, while Chelsea’s alarming collapse has effectively ended their hopes of returning to Europe’s elite competition.

According to Opta’s supercomputer, Liverpool enter the weekend with a 98.29% chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Chelsea, meanwhile, are left clinging to only the faintest possibility of sneaking into the Europa League places after an awful run of form.

Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford last weekend ended a three-match Premier League winning streak and exposed the defensive vulnerabilities that have plagued their season. Despite recovering from two goals down against Manchester United, Slot’s men ultimately fell short, with Kobbie Mainoo’s late strike condemning the Reds to their 11th league defeat of the campaign.

That number alone highlights Liverpool’s inconsistency. They have now lost more Premier League games this season than in any campaign since 2014-15, while defensive problems continue to undermine their progress. The Reds have conceded two or more goals in 16 league matches this season, their worst record in that category since 2012-13.

Still, Liverpool’s position remains strong thanks to their form at Anfield. They have collected 10 points from their last four home league games and know victory over Chelsea would move them to the brink of officially securing Champions League football for next season.

While Liverpool remain under scrutiny, Chelsea arrive on Merseyside in complete disarray. The Blues have lost six consecutive Premier League matches and currently sit ninth in the table after Monday’s damaging 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

It has been a dramatic collapse for Chelsea, who at one stage appeared genuine contenders for a top-five finish. Instead, a disastrous run has seen them fall completely out of the Champions League race, with caretaker manager Calum MacFarlane unable to halt the slide since taking charge.

Defensively, Chelsea have been particularly poor. They have now conceded in 13 consecutive Premier League matches and shipped three goals in four of their last five league outings. Their recent defeat to Forest summed up their struggles perfectly, as another shaky defensive display left them chasing the game before João Pedro produced a spectacular stoppage-time overhead kick to end the club’s lengthy scoring drought.

Despite Chelsea’s poor form, João Pedro has remained one of the few positives in an otherwise miserable campaign. The Brazilian forward has scored 15 Premier League goals this season and has been directly involved in seven of Chelsea’s last nine league goals. Alongside Cole Palmer, he remains Chelsea’s biggest attacking threat heading into Saturday’s encounter.

Liverpool, meanwhile, continue to rely heavily on Dominik Szoboszlai for creativity and attacking inspiration. The Hungarian midfielder has enjoyed an excellent individual campaign, recording 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions. No Liverpool midfielder has achieved double figures for both goals and assists since Steven Gerrard during the 2013-14 season.

TEAM NEWS

Team news could also play a major role in determining the outcome.

Liverpool are expected to remain without Mohamed Salah, Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitiké, while doubts continue to surround Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konaté.

Chelsea’s injury situation is hardly any better. Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez is expected to miss out after suffering an injury against Nottingham Forest, meaning Filip Jörgensen is likely to start at Anfield. The Blues could also remain without Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho.

Meanwhile, Mykhaylo Mudryk remains unavailable following his provisional suspension after failing a drugs test earlier this season. The Ukrainian winger was suspended after reports emerged that he had tested positive for a banned substance, with both Chelsea and the player awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Mudryk has denied knowingly taking any prohibited substances and previously stated that the result came as a complete shock to him, while the club have continued to support the winger throughout the process.

His absence has been another significant setback during an already turbulent campaign for Chelsea. Despite struggling for consistency this season, Mudryk’s pace and directness offered an option in wide areas that the Blues have often lacked during their recent run of poor results.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

History does offer Chelsea some encouragement.

The Blues have won their last two Premier League matches against Liverpool, including a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, and are attempting to complete their first league double over Liverpool since 2013-14.

However, Stamford Bridge success has rarely translated to Anfield in recent years. Chelsea have managed just one win in their last 10 Premier League visits to Liverpool, while the Reds have won the last two meetings between the sides on Merseyside.

Given Chelsea’s defensive issues and Liverpool’s strong home form, it is difficult to look beyond a Liverpool victory. Chelsea certainly possess enough attacking quality to cause problems, particularly through Palmer and João Pedro, but their fragile defence could struggle to cope with Liverpool’s intensity and attacking movement at Anfield.

With Champions League qualification within touching distance, Liverpool know this is a chance they simply cannot afford to waste.
