Liverpool just about edged past ten-man Newcastle United in a chaotic match at St. James’ Park, with sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha scoring a stoppage-time winner on his Premier League debut — becoming Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer and announcing himself to the footballing world.

The game began at a frantic pace. From the first whistle, the atmosphere was electric. Every interception and foul drew a cheer from the home crowd.

Newcastle dominated the opening half-hour, but it was Liverpool who went ahead in the 35th minute. Ryan Gravenberch, making his return from suspension, struck a low shot from distance past Nick Pope to give the Reds the lead.

Newcastle’s problems worsened just before half-time when Anthony Gordon was sent off for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk. After a VAR review showed visible track marks on the Liverpool captain’s calf, the red card was issued.

Liverpool extended their lead immediately after the break. Hugo Ekitike, the former Newcastle target, was involved from one end of the pitch to the other before slotting in a shot from the edge of the box — Liverpool’s earliest second-half goal in a Premier League match since 2013.

Ekitike also became just the fourth Liverpool player to score in both of his first two Premier League appearances.

Despite being down to ten men, Newcastle didn’t fold. Bruno Guimarães pulled one back with a powerful header, making it 2–1. As the clock ticked down, the game turned even more chaotic due to injuries. Sandro Tonali was subbed off in the 66th minute with a suspected shoulder issue. Joelinton also came off injured, while Fabian Schär was withdrawn after a concussion check. This led to the introduction of Malick Thiaw, a recent signing from AC Milan.

Then came the equaliser. William Osula levelled the match for Newcastle with a brilliant finish from a long ball, reviving the St. James’ Park crowd. Remarkably, Liverpool — even with a one-man advantage — had been second-best for most of the match and struggled to control the tempo.

Yet somehow, they emerged victorious.

Just days before his 17th birthday, it was Rio Ngumoha who found the winning touch. In the 100th minute, a low cross from Mohamed Salah ran perfectly into the path of the teenager, who calmly slotted home to seal all three points for the visitors.

It was a grandstand finish to a Premier League weekend, with the drama at St. James’ Park delivering yet another unforgettable chapter in this fixture’s modern history.
