Leeds vs Sunderland Preview: Can Farke’s Absence Disrupt Elland Road Momentum?

Leeds United host Sunderland on Tuesday night in a Premier League clash that means more than the table suggests.
One side is quietly unravelling. The other continues to fight its way further from the relegation zone. Something has to give.
On paper, this looks like a mid-table Premier League fixture between two newly promoted sides finding their feet.
In reality, it’s anything but.
Leeds come into this game off a frustrating 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, a loss that ended a four-match unbeaten run and left their manager Daniel Farke seeing red literally.
Farke was given a straight red card on the touchline after losing his composure at referee Peter Bankes, picking up a touchline ban that rules him out on Tuesday.
Sunderland, meanwhile, drew 1-1 at Bournemouth — a result that snapped a three-game losing streak but did nothing to hide the fact they have now gone four straight without a win in the Premier League.
Let’s be honest Daniel Farke’s red card is the headline going into this one.
His assistant Eddie Riemer steps into the dugout for the first time in a Premier League game, adding a layer of uncertainty around Leeds that their opponents will be well aware of.
But here’s the thing: Leeds have been well-drilled all season. The system is understood. The players know their roles. A touchline ban does not rewrite the tactics board overnight.
What it does change is the emotional temperature inside that dugout.
Farke is a manager who wears his passion on his sleeve, and his fury at the weekend showed that. Riemer is an unknown quantity at this level, and how Leeds respond to high-pressure moments without their boss on the touchline will prove interesting.
Sunderland will look to exploit any sign of disorganisation early. Do not be surprised if Le Bris sets his side up to press aggressively in the opening 20 minutes to test that resolve.
What’s at Stake
Leeds sit 15th with 31 points from 28 games. Sunderland are 12th on 37 points a six-point gap that flatters neither side right now.
For Leeds, the maths are simple: they are six points clear of the relegation zone, but West Ham are not done yet. Win tonight and they move closer to mathematical safety. Lose, and the conversations start again.
For Sunderland, this is where it becomes interesting.
They were briefly flirting with European football back in the autumn that feels like a long time ago now. Having lost four of their last eight Premier League games, a win here does not dramatically change the picture, but a loss begins to make their position look more nervous than the table currently shows.
Their away form has been genuinely poor nine Premier League away games without a win since October.
Leeds at home, however, are a different animal: three wins, two draws and two losses in their last seven at Elland Road, with those two defeats coming against Arsenal and Manchester City.
That growing home confidence could give them a psychological edge.
The concern for Farke or Riemer tonight is the number of draws. Leeds have drawn too many games this season that should have been wins. If that pattern continues, Sunderland are exactly the kind of team to hold them.
Head-to-Head
These two drew 1-1 at the Stadium of Light back in December, continuing a sequence that has seen four consecutive matches without a Sunderland win against Leeds.
The Black Cats have not beaten the Whites since December 2023.
Three of the last four head-to-head meetings have ended level. Expect a tight, competitive contest between two newly promoted sides.
