Hull City vs Aston Villa; Villa search for first points at unbeaten Tigers

Hull City will welcome Aston Villa tomorrow to the MKM Stadium, looking to extend their

unbeaten streak against a winless Villa side.

They have made a strong impression after being promoted through last season's

Championship play-offs.

The Tigers prepare to take on another top-four finishing side for their second fixture of the

2026/27 season.

They will return to the pitch with a sound sense of confidence after two

clean sheets.

Having defeated Manchester United for the first time in the Premier League

and snatched the three points against Coventry City last weekend.

It has been an impressive way to kickstart their return to the Premier League.

Sergi Jakirovic used a 5-4-1 approach in both league games, recording just 28% possession

against Manchester United and 31% possession against Coventry.

His side has shown it is comfortable conceding possession, defending compactly, and

capitalising on opportunities rather than needing to dominate the ball.

Unai Emery’s side search for their first three points after losing 1-0 to Arsenal last weekend.

They have yet to find their feet with their first two fixtures, conceding five goals in only two

matches.

The result compounded a tough opening for Villa, who remain goalless after their first two

Premier League matches. The closest they came to a breakthrough was an excellent effort

from Emiliano Buendía that rattled off the crossbar.

The significant squad turnover over the summer, including the departure of central defender

Ezri Konsa, could have affected the squad's chemistry.

The starting 11 lacked a natural flow rather than their usual rhythm, which was becoming increasingly apparent.

Villa appeared incoherent, and their fluent attacking sequences that had defined their

previous season were now a foreign concept by comparison.

Furthermore, the midfield struggled to produce a creative spark or latch onto a playmaker

capable of carving open lanes through the centre of the pitch.

However, the 1-0 defeat to the Gunners was still a step forward for Emery’s men, in

comparison to the heavy 4-0 opening defeat against Brighton.

They showed better defensive composition, but the severe lack of cutting edge remains the burning issue.

The two sides have not met since January 2019, when they played out a 2-2 draw at Villa

Park in the Championship.

Their previous meeting at the MKM Stadium also ended in a 0-0 draw in March 2018.

However, Villa have historically held the advantage in this fixture, winning six of the eight

Premier League meetings, while Hull have won once and drawn once.

The Tigers' most recent victory came in February 2015, when goals from Dame N'Doye and Nikica Jelavić secured a 2-0 win at home.

Emery highlighted the progress his team has made: “We’ve lost. We competed well. We are

trying to rebuild the team, but a lot of positive things after the result.”

Jakirović’s side is a nightmare blueprint for Villa’s current creative struggles.

Hull have shown defensive flexibility, with their low blocks forcing opponents wide.

Villa must be wary of Hull City’s tendency to lure players from the flanks intentionally but suffocate them inside the penalty box.

The deeper Villa get against the 5-4-1 system, the greater the panic could become and the more it could sink into Hull’s defensive structure, leaving Villa vulnerable to a swift counterattack.

Much like quicksand, the more frantically Villa struggle to break free,

the deeper they will sink into the trap.
