Fleetwood Town 1-1 Arsenal (5-3 pens): League Two side stun Gunners in EFL Cup

Fleetwood Town produced one of the biggest shocks in Carabao Cup history, defeating Premier League champions Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi fired the League Two hosts ahead in the 21st minute before Viktor Gyökeres equalised five minutes into the second half, but Arsenal’s wastefulness in front of goal proved costly.
The drama continued when 16-year-old Max Dowman was sent off in the closing stages, before Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch denied Bruno Guimarães from the spot to help seal a famous victory.
Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor struggled to hide his amazement at the historic result, saying: “I couldn't believe it, the biggest night in the club's history in terms of opposition coming to town and we've managed to beat the champions somehow.”
Arsenal started brightly, with Dowman offering a threat down the right, but the visitors struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut opportunities.
The youngster had an excellent opportunity to put the Gunners ahead in the 19th minute when he broke behind the Fleetwood defence, only to overhit his cross with Gyökeres waiting in the penalty area.
Fleetwood punished that miss just two minutes later. Harrison Neal’s pass found Loupalo-Bi, who held off Marli Salmon before turning sharply and finishing into the far corner beyond Illan Meslier.

The hosts defended resolutely for the remainder of the first half, while Jurriën Timber wasted Arsenal’s best opportunity before the break by heading Dowman’s free-kick wide.
Arsenal found their equaliser shortly after half-time when Ceadach O’Neill delivered a dangerous ball into the box. After Fleetwood failed to clear their lines, Gyökeres scrambled the ball home from close range.
The visitors appeared increasingly likely to complete the comeback, but Fleetwood produced a series of crucial defensive interventions. Kai Havertz was denied by an outstanding Ryan Bennett block in the 55th minute before firing into the side netting four minutes later.
Havertz continued to struggle in front of goal, missing further opportunities as Fleetwood desperately attempted to hold on.
The contest took another dramatic turn in the 85th minute when Dowman was dismissed after appearing to kick out at Neal following a strong challenge. Arsenal were reduced to ten men, yet still came agonisingly close to finding a late winner.

Lynch produced a superb save to deny Ben White at the back post before tipping Martin Ødegaard’s fierce effort behind. Havertz then missed another chance in stoppage time, ensuring the tie would be decided by penalties.
Fleetwood held their nerve in the shootout, with Ronan Coughlan, Neal, Will Davies, Andy Cannon and Conor Haughey all converting. Ødegaard, Havertz and Gyökeres scored for Arsenal, but Lynch saved Guimarães’ fourth penalty before Haughey converted the decisive kick to spark jubilant celebrations.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta was left to reflect on a frustrating evening for his side, admitting: “We need to take this on the chin.” The Spaniard was disappointed by his team’s failure to convert their chances, as Arsenal’s cup campaign ended despite their second-half pressure.
The result sends Fleetwood into the EFL Cup quarter-finals, giving the League Two side an opportunity to extend their remarkable cup run.
Arsenal must regroup ahead of their Premier League trip to Liverpool, with Arteta’s players left to consider how missed chances turned a promising performance into a disappointing cup exit.
