There’s never a quiet Merseyside derby but this one feels like it has everything riding on it.
For Everton FC, it’s more than just another meeting with their biggest rivals. This will be the first derby at their new home, a huge moment after leaving Goodison Park behind.
That ground saw its fair share of chaos over the years and if the final derby there is anything to go by, this one has all the makings of a classic. New stadium, same old intensity you can already imagine the atmosphere.
But it’s not just about the occasion.
Everton have put themselves right in the mix for European football, and suddenly this game carries real stakes. Win, and they could move within two points of Liverpool FC in fifth place.
That would have seemed unlikely not too long ago, but it shows just how much is riding on this match. It’s pride, yes but it’s also a massive opportunity.
Liverpool come into the game needing a response.
Their Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain still lingers, and pressure is beginning to build on Arne Slot. Lose a derby on top of that, and the noise will only grow louder.
They need to steady things and quickly.
The reverse fixture had plenty of drama.
Liverpool edged it 2–1, with Hugo Ekitike scoring the winner. However, he will not feature this time after suffering an Achilles injury against PSG, ruling him out for nine months a significant blow in a fixture often decided by moments.
So it all sets up perfectly.
Everton have belief and momentum. Liverpool have pressure and a point to prove.
Add in a brand-new stadium hosting its first derby, and it feels like one of those nights where anything can happen.
And if it’s anything like the final clash at Goodison expect chaos.
