Chelsea vs Burnley: Blues Eye Champions League Push as Clarets Fight for Survival

Saturday’s fixture is truly a tale of two opposites. Chelsea find themselves in red-hot form under new manager Liam Rosenior as they push for Champions League football next season.

Burnley, on the other hand, arrive on the back of a humiliating FA Cup defeat to League One side Mansfield Town and sit in the bottom three, a long way off safety. Scott Parker finds himself under mounting pressure, and reports suggest this game could be pivotal for his future at Turf Moor.

The hosts come into this match in solid form, winning three, drawing one and losing one of their last five league games. Their most recent encounter ended in a 2–2 draw at Elland Road last weekend, where they were 2–0 up before letting the three points slip away. They will be fully motivated to bounce back strongly this weekend.

For the visitors, last weekend’s dramatic comeback win at Crystal Palace is their only league victory since late October. One win, two draws and two losses in their last five games leaves them needing to pick up points in every remaining fixture including this weekend’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

Burnley’s torrid Premier League campaign has been a slow burner, as they find themselves nine points from safety with 26 games played and a goal difference of -23. Achieving that elusive 17th position by the end of the season seems a long shot, but having recently picked up points against Liverpool, Spurs and Palace, anything can happen.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior appears to have breathed new life into Stamford Bridge. Sitting just one point off fourth place is an attractive position for the London side, especially with the opportunity to move into the Champions League spots with a win this weekend before Liverpool and Manchester United play on Sunday and Monday respectively.

Historically, Burnley have struggled against Chelsea, winning just one of their 19 Premier League meetings that victory coming on the opening day of the 2017–18 season. The Clarets have amassed just eight points against Chelsea in the competition, though seven of those came at Stamford Bridge, which may provide Parker’s side with some optimism heading into Saturday.

However, Chelsea will be encouraged by Burnley’s record in London this season, with the Lancashire side conceding two or more goals in every league game in the capital. The hosts will also be eager to avoid following earlier defeats to Sunderland and Leeds, which would make it the first time they failed to beat all three promoted sides in one season.

Team News

Chelsea will be without Marc Cucurella and Jamie Gittens due to hamstring injuries, while Romeo Lavia and Dário Essugo are sidelined with thigh issues. Levi Colwill also remains out with an ACL injury. However, Cole Palmer and Reece James are expected to be part of the matchday squad as they continue to be monitored in their recovery.

Burnley will still be without club captain Josh Cullen due to a cruciate ligament injury, while Swiss forward Zeki Amdouni is also sidelined, though Parker has confirmed his return is only a couple of months away. Axel Tuanzebe will miss out with an Achilles injury, and Jordan Beyer, Mike Trésor and Connor Roberts are also unavailable.

Saturday’s game at Stamford Bridge is significant at both ends of the table. Chelsea need victory to strengthen their Champions League ambitions, while Burnley desperately require points to keep their survival hopes alive.

Can Liam Rosenior move Chelsea even closer to Europe’s elite competition? Or can Scott Parker guide Burnley to a first back-to-back league win in the capital since 2019–20 and apply pressure to the teams above them?
