Chelsea enter the fixture aiming to make it three wins from three competitive matches under new head coach Xabi Alonso, while Brighton arrive in west London after making an emphatic statement on the opening weekend with a 4–0 victory over Aston Villa.

The two sides have already produced contrasting but positive moments during the opening stages of the season. Chelsea began their Premier League campaign with a 3–2 victory over Fulham before following it with a 2–0 Carabao Cup win against Luton Town on Thursday.

Brighton’s opening league fixture was even more convincing, with Fabian Hürzeler’s side scoring four times inside the opening 31 minutes against Villa. Jack Hinshelwood was particularly influential, scoring twice during a dominant first half.

Chelsea’s victory over Luton was more controlled. Danny Welbeck opened the scoring early in the second half before a Hakeem Odoffin own goal secured Chelsea’s progression into the third round, where they will face Leeds United.

Sunday’s meeting therefore represents another early test for both managers as they continue to shape their respective squads.

Team News

Chelsea could have several important players available again after Alonso managed his squad during the midweek cup fixture.

Moisés Caicedo remains the main question mark. The midfielder has missed Chelsea’s opening two competitive matches after suffering a setback in training, but Alonso is hopeful that he can return to training and potentially feature against his former club.

Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda were both left out against Luton, although Alonso confirmed that neither absence was due to injury. Both players are expected to train ahead of Sunday’s fixture.

“With Levi, after his injury last season, he is still in a period where he has to take the right steps,” Alonso explained, with Chelsea continuing to manage Colwill’s workload carefully.

Wesley Fofana could also return after completing his two-match suspension against Luton.

Brighton have their own selection concerns. Stefanos Tzimas, Yankuba Minteh and Evan Ferguson are unavailable, while Carlos Baleba is also absent following his move to Manchester United.

Jordan Henderson remains unavailable for Chelsea as he continues his recovery from the injury sustained during the World Cup. Alonso has indicated that the summer signing could be given the green light to return soon.

Two Ambitious Squads

Both clubs have been active during the summer transfer window, although their recruitment strategies have followed different paths.

Chelsea have spent around £333 million on new arrivals, with Morgan Rogers the headline addition following his £117 million move from Aston Villa.

Valentin Barco, Maxence Lacroix, Geovany Quenda and Marco Palestra have also joined Alonso’s squad, while the arrivals of Premier League veterans Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson provide additional experience.

Brighton have also invested heavily, particularly in defence. Pascal Struijk arrived from Leeds United for £20 million, while Luka Vuskovic joined from Tottenham Hotspur for £46 million. Austrian defender Michael Svoboda has also been brought in from Venezia.

The Seagulls have added further attacking options with the signings of 19-year-old Nigerian winger Zadok Yohanna from AIK and Portuguese winger Rodrigo Rego from Benfica, while right-back Costinha has arrived from Olympiacos.

There has also been a familiar return, with Pascal Groß rejoining Brighton after two seasons at Borussia Dortmund.

Form Gives Brighton Confidence

While Chelsea have started the campaign with two victories, Brighton’s recent form has been equally encouraging.

Hürzeler’s side have won four of their last five matches, with their only dropped points coming in a goalless Conference League draw against Tromso.

Before their victory over Aston Villa, Brighton recorded friendly wins against Bologna and Roma and also defeated Strasbourg 4–3.

Chelsea’s recent run includes victories over Fulham and Luton, following a pre-season campaign that produced wins against Real Sociedad and AC Milan, a draw with Johor Darul Ta’zim and defeats to Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur.

Both teams therefore arrive with confidence, although Brighton’s defensive record stands out. They have conceded just three goals across their last five matches, while Chelsea have scored in each of their last five.

Brighton Hold the Recent Advantage

Recent history will provide Brighton with plenty of encouragement heading into Sunday’s contest.

The Seagulls have won the last four meetings between the sides, scoring exactly three goals in each of their last three encounters.

Their most recent meeting came on April 21, when Brighton recorded a 3–0 victory at the Amex Stadium.

Chelsea’s most recent success came at Stamford Bridge in September 2024, when the Blues defeated Brighton 4–2.

The last five meetings have also been particularly entertaining, with every match producing more than 2.5 goals.

Probable Line-ups

One of the biggest questions surrounding Chelsea’s starting XI could come in goal.

Robert Sánchez started Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture against Fulham, but his performance in the 3–2 victory raised questions over whether he should retain his place. Sánchez was criticised for his involvement in Fulham’s first goal, with the goalkeeper again coming under scrutiny following a number of inconsistent performances during his Chelsea career.

That could open the door for Mike Penders to make his Premier League debut. The young Belgian goalkeeper started Thursday’s 2–0 Carabao Cup victory over Luton, keeping a clean sheet in his first competitive appearance for Chelsea since returning from his loan spell at Strasbourg.

There is also a major wildcard in the form of Emiliano Martínez. Chelsea have agreed a reported £7.5 million deal with Aston Villa for the experienced Argentina international, with the transfer coming amid concerns over Sánchez’s performances.

If the transfer is completed and Martínez is registered in time, Alonso could make the bold decision to hand the World Cup-winning goalkeeper an immediate debut against Brighton.

However, with the move only recently agreed, Penders or Sánchez could still be selected if the necessary registration process is not completed in time.

The situation therefore leaves Alonso with three potential options: retain Sánchez, reward Penders for his clean-sheet performance against Luton, or immediately turn to the experience of Martínez.

Reece James and Malo Gusto could operate as the wing-backs, with Roméo Lavia alongside the returning midfield options. Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer are expected to support João Pedro in attack.

Brighton are likely to retain their 4-2-3-1 formation, with Bart Verbruggen in goal and Luka Vuskovic, Lewis Dunk and Olivier Boscagli among the defensive options.

Pascal Groß and Diego Gomez could provide the midfield base, while Jack Hinshelwood, Yasin Ayari and Maxime De Cuyper operate behind Georginio Rutter.

A Competitive Stamford Bridge Encounter

Sunday’s encounter brings together two sides who have plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

Chelsea have the opportunity to make it three victories from three competitive matches under Alonso, while Brighton can follow up their emphatic victory over Aston Villa with another statement result against one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

The recent head-to-head record gives Brighton the advantage, but Chelsea will have home advantage and the possibility of welcoming several players back into contention.

With both teams possessing considerable attacking talent, and the last five meetings producing 25 goals between them, another competitive and open contest could be in store at Stamford Bridge.
