Sunderland AFC’s difficult run at the Stadium of Light continued on Saturday afternoon as they slipped to a narrow 1–0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
The game was a tight and fairly even affair for long stretches, with both sides creating chances but struggling to find a decisive moment in the final third. Sunderland showed flashes of attacking quality, particularly through their energetic midfield, but Brighton’s organisation ultimately proved enough to secure all three points.

The key moment arrived in the 58th minute, when Yankuba Minteh bundled home the only goal of the game.
The winger reacted quickest after Sunderland failed to properly clear a corner, with his effort finding its way past goalkeeper Melker Ellborg to give the visitors the lead.
Sunderland thought they had found a breakthrough earlier in the match when Chris Rigg finished from close range, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR check for offside, leaving the home side frustrated.

Despite pushing late on, Régis Le Bris’ side were unable to break through Brighton’s defence, with the visitors holding firm to claim a valuable away win.
The result continues a worrying trend for Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Earlier in the season, the Black Cats had built a formidable record on home soil and had not lost there before the turn of the year. However, this defeat marks their third home loss since the start of 2026, highlighting a noticeable dip in form in front of their own supporters.

For Brighton, the victory was significant for another reason as well it marked their first win at the Stadium of Light in 45 years, underlining how difficult the venue has traditionally been for the Seagulls.
In a match decided by fine margins, Sunderland will feel they had moments to take something from the game, but Brighton’s clinical second-half strike ensured the points returned to the south coast.
