Liverpool have suffered another significant blow to their hopes of playing Champions League football next season, as their tenth Premier League defeat came against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Two crucial goals from former Man United forward Danny Welbeck punished his boyhood rivals, thwarting Liverpool’s chances of solidifying their top-four position, with Aston Villa and Chelsea still to play later in the matchweek.

Liverpool’s night began in misery from the outset. Hugo Ekitike was forced off within the opening ten minutes after picking up a knock following a collision with former Reds midfielder James Milner. The French forward was replaced by Curtis Jones, but from that moment on, Liverpool appeared rattled as Brighton launched wave after wave of attacking pressure.

First Half

Danny Welbeck made that pressure count, opening the scoring inside thirteen minutes.

The goal stemmed from an unnecessary and overhit pass from Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to his backline, particularly targeting Ibrahima Konaté. Under little pressure, the pass resulted in possession being lost and eventually conceded for a throw-in.

Brighton capitalised instantly.

From the throw, Turkish full-back Ferdi Kadıoğlu delivered a whipped ball to the back post, where Paraguayan international Diego Gómez headed across goal. Welbeck reacted quickest, leaping ahead of Konaté to give Brighton a deserved early lead.

Despite dominating in terms of attempts on goal, Liverpool lacked cutting edge. There was more hope than belief among the travelling supporters as chances came and went.

Alexis Mac Allister’s header in the 21st minute forced a strong save from Bart Verbruggen, but Liverpool’s equaliser came through a moment of fortune.

Mamardashvili redeemed himself in the build-up, floating a long ball forward that caught Lewis Dunk off guard. His misjudged pass allowed Milos Kerkez to pounce before lobbing Verbruggen to restore parity.

Brighton nearly regained the lead before half-time when Yankuba Minteh’s dangerous delivery forced Mamardashvili into action once again, with Welbeck lurking.

The teams went into the break level, but Brighton were clearly the more controlled and threatening side.

Second Half

The second half began in similar fashion, with Brighton immediately asserting control.

Within five minutes, Mamardashvili was called into action to deny Kadıoğlu, before Minteh’s pinpoint cross found Jack Hinshelwood, who fed Welbeck for a simple finish his second of the night and 12th goal of the season.

From there, Brighton dominated.

Liverpool were pinned back by relentless pressure:

  • Diego Gómez tested Mamardashvili from a set-piece

  • Minteh raced through one-on-one, only to be denied brilliantly

Liverpool’s attacking response was minimal. Curtis Jones forced a save from Verbruggen, while Cody Gakpo’s trademark cut inside produced one late effort but clear-cut chances were scarce.

Brighton ultimately saw the game out comfortably, claiming all three points on home soil.

What It Means

The result lifts Brighton to eighth in the Premier League at the time of writing, as they continue their push for a strong finish.

For Liverpool, however, the pressure intensifies.

This marks their tenth league defeat the first time in ten years, and their hopes of securing Champions League football continue to narrow.

Questions will now begin to surround Arne Slot, as the Reds’ season risks slipping away at a crucial stage.
