With both teams level on points heading into the match, the situation is clear victory would all but secure UEFA Champions League qualification for next season.
Defeat, however, would significantly increase the pressure heading into the final stages of the campaign.
Both sides arrive following frustrating draws.
Liverpool were held by a Chelsea side that had not won in six league matches, and it felt like another familiar story away from home this season. Arne Slot’s side have often allowed opponents back into matches they appeared to control, dropping unnecessary points despite dominating long periods of play. It has been one of the main frustrations surrounding their campaign.
Villa, meanwhile, endured frustration of their own following a draw against Burnley. Unai Emery’s side looked fatigued at times, which is understandable given the importance of the fixtures ahead.
With a UEFA Europa League final just five days after this match, Emery faces a major decision. Does he field his strongest possible side knowing Champions League qualification remains within touching distance? Or does he prioritise resting key players ahead of Villa’s biggest European match in years?
There is a strong possibility Villa could rotate, and Liverpool will see that as an opportunity.
However, the challenge for Liverpool is that Villa Park has been one of the toughest grounds to visit this season. Even with tired legs, Villa’s intensity at home can quickly overwhelm opponents.
Ollie Watkins remains Villa’s biggest attacking threat, while John McGinn and Morgan Rogers continue to provide the aggression and energy Emery demands in high-pressure fixtures should they start.
For Liverpool, much of the attacking responsibility has fallen on Dominik Szoboszlai, while youngster Rio Ngumoha has quickly become a fan favourite despite limited game time.
An interesting detail heading into this clash is that Liverpool are the only side currently inside the top five that Villa have managed to defeat this season.
The reverse fixture at Anfield ended in a 2-0 Liverpool victory thanks to second-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch.
That result will give Liverpool confidence, but this feels like a very different challenge altogether.
Both teams understand just how important these three points could become in the race for Champions League football, which should make for a tense and fascinating contest.
