Chelsea head to Villa Park on Wednesday for a crucial midweek clash against fellow top-four contenders Aston Villa, with both sides desperate to strengthen their push for Champions League football.
The Blues enter the fixture on the back of three disappointing results in a row. Dropping points against two newly promoted sides, Leeds and Burnley, despite leading in both games will have been a huge frustration for Liam Rosenior’s side. A defeat against Arsenal at the weekend further damaged Chelsea’s chase for the top four, leaving them six points behind Villa in the final Champions League qualification spot.
Aston Villa have also struggled for consistency in recent weeks, having picked up just one win in their last five Premier League matches. A disappointing 2-0 defeat to bottom-of-the-table Wolves last time out saw the Villans drop to fourth place for the first time since Gameweek 13.
Recent meetings between the two sides suggest Aston Villa may have the edge heading into this contest. Villa have won four of their last six Premier League matches against Chelsea under current manager Unai Emery, including back-to-back 2-1 victories.
Team News
Chelsea are without six first-team players heading into this fixture, five through injury and one through suspension.
There remains uncertainty over whether left-back Marc Cucurella will be fully fit despite returning to training this week. Levi Colwill, Dário Essugo, Estêvão and Jamie Gittens all remain sidelined through injury. Pedro Neto’s dismissal in the previous match also means he will be unavailable for Liam Rosenior’s side.
Similarly, Aston Villa have several injury concerns. Knee injuries to both John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara mean they will be out for the foreseeable future. Youri Tielemans, Harvey Elliott and Andrés García are also unavailable for Unai Emery.
Both sides head into this fixture needing a result to strengthen their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
A win for Aston Villa would extend the gap between themselves and sixth place to nine points, placing them in a strong position heading into the final nine games of the season.
However, a victory for Chelsea would cut the gap to just three points and reignite their push for a top-four finish.
