Arsenal will look to continue their impressive recent run when they welcome Sunderland to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with momentum firmly on their side across both domestic and cup competitions.
Mikel Arteta’s side arrive in confident mood after securing their place in the EFL Cup final with a comprehensive aggregate victory over Chelsea earlier this week. That success followed a dominant 4-0 Premier League win away at Leeds United, a result that helped steady the ship after a difficult spell in which Arsenal failed to win three consecutive league matches.
Recent slip-ups from their closest challengers have further strengthened Arsenal’s position at the summit. Aston Villa were beaten at home by Brentford, while Manchester City surrendered a two-goal advantage against Tottenham, allowing the Gunners to establish a six-point cushion in the title race.
Having already secured three wins across all competitions, Arteta’s men will be eager to make it four in a row. They will also be keen to preserve a formidable home record against newly promoted opposition. Arsenal are unbeaten in 43 top-flight home matches against such sides, equalling Chelsea’s longest run in the Premier League era and underlining the scale of the task facing Sunderland this weekend.
The visitors travel south in encouraging form after recovering from a challenging winter period. A five-match winless run between late December and early January threatened to derail their progress, but recent results suggest they have rediscovered momentum. Three wins from their last four outings, including an emphatic 3-0 victory over Burnley, have lifted confidence within Régis Le Bris’s squad.
Sunderland currently sit eighth in the table and remain firmly in the hunt for European qualification. They trail sixth-placed Liverpool by three points and are only five behind the top four, keeping ambitions alive as the season enters its latter stages. However, their away form remains a concern, with no league victories on the road in seven matches since October.
Despite those struggles, Sunderland can draw encouragement from the reverse fixture earlier this season, when they produced a spirited comeback to earn a 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
For Arsenal, another three points would further reinforce their status as title favourites and maintain pressure on those chasing from behind. Sunderland, meanwhile, will hope to combine renewed confidence with improved resilience away from home in an attempt to challenge the league leaders.
Team News
Arsenal’s preparations have been disrupted by several injury concerns. Mikel Merino is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a foot problem, while Bukayo Saka is unlikely to feature after sustaining a hip injury during the warm-up at Elland Road.
Martin Ødegaard missed the midweek cup victory over Chelsea but is expected to be assessed ahead of kick-off. Max Dowman is also closing in on a return following an ankle issue.
Kai Havertz is set to return to the starting XI after making a decisive impact from the bench against Chelsea, scoring the late goal that sealed Arsenal’s passage to Wembley.
Sunderland may be without captain Granit Xhaka, who is recovering from an ankle injury and could remain sidelined for several weeks. Bertrand Traoré is nearing a return from a knee problem, while Jocelin Ta Bi continues his recovery from an ankle complaint.
Omar Alderete raised concerns after being forced off late against Burnley, but medical staff have since played down the severity of the issue and expect him to be available.
With both sides balancing form, fitness and ambition, Saturday’s encounter promises to be a significant test for two teams with very different objectives but plenty still at stake.
