Arsenal have taken a major step toward landing Viktor Gyökeres — but the battle with Sporting CP is far from over.

According to sources close to the deal, the Gunners have reached an agreement in principle with the Swedish striker on a long-term contract running until 2030. Mikel Arteta wants Gyökeres. The player wants Arsenal. But Sporting CP? They’re still digging in their heels.

President Frederico Varandas made his stance crystal clear this week when he said:

“He will not leave for €60M + €10M. He just won’t.”

That’s the message coming out of Lisbon — and it’s unwavering. Sporting believe Gyökeres is worth more than the numbers currently on the table. They’re holding firm on the €100M release clause, and they’re not bluffing.

Behind closed doors, Gyökeres has told Sporting he has no intention of returning. The 26-year-old believes a verbal pact was made last year: one that would allow him to pursue a summer exit if a top European club came calling.

From the striker’s side, there’s a strong sense of betrayal. After delivering an outstanding season — 29 goals and 11 assists across competitions — Gyökeres expected the club to honour their side of the promise.

Now, tensions are rising. Player vs boardroom. Loyalty vs leverage.

For Arsenal, this isn’t just about signing a striker — it’s about elevating their title credentials.

With Gabriel Jesus struggling for consistency and injuries disrupting squad momentum last season, Gyökeres fits the mould: strong, quick, clinical, and already proven in Europe.

But the Gunners have been burned before by drawn-out transfer sagas. If Sporting remain stubborn, will Arsenal’s newly structured sporting leadership walk away? Or are they prepared to test the Portuguese club’s resolve with a bigger bid — or a late-window power play?
