Arsenal 3-0 Fulham: Gunners Take Massive Step Towards Premier League Title

Arsenal beat Fulham to go six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

A brace from Viktor Gyökeres and a first-half strike from Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal a 3-0 win at home to Fulham.

The result puts Arsenal six points ahead of Manchester City in the Premier League title race, and significantly improves their goal difference.

The defeat has damaged Fulham’s hopes of qualifying for European football, after Brentford’s win over West Ham United earlier in the day.

Gunners Run Rampant

Arsenal’s 3-0 advantage at half-time was the first time they’d built a three-goal lead in the first half of any game in the Premier League this season.

They created problems for Fulham’s back four almost from the start, with Leandro Trossard dragging a long-range effort wide after two minutes.

Gyökeres opened the scoring with his 20th goal in all competitions this season as he turned in captain Saka’s cross after nine minutes.

Saka was making his first start since returning from Achilles tendon problems. The England winger dominated his duel with Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson throughout the first half.

Robinson’s return to the starting line-up, at the expense of Ryan Sessegnon, broke up a Fulham back four who had kept clean sheets in their previous two league games.

The USA international was outsprinted by Saka in the build-up to Arsenal’s first goal and was outmuscled by Gyökeres before the striker played in Saka for their second.

Gyökeres added a third in first-half stoppage time, when he outjumped Fulham centre-back Joachim Andersen and headed in Trossard’s cross.

Arteta Rests Key Players

With his side in total control of the game, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta took Saka off at half-time, bringing on Noni Madueke.

The visitors started the second half more brightly, however, with striker Raúl Jiménez firing over from range and right-back Timothy Castagne having his header blocked by opposite number Riccardo Calafiori.

Fulham never looked particularly likely to get back into the game, however, with Arteta deciding to substitute Gyökeres and Declan Rice for Gabriel Jesus and Martin Zubimendi after 64 minutes.

Today’s defeat marks Fulham’s fourth consecutive away game without a goal and leaves them with only one goal across any of their last four matches.

While today’s lacklustre performance can be somewhat attributed to a rumoured virus spreading through the squad, Fulham manager Marco Silva will surely demand more from his players for the remainder of the season.

Player of the Match: Viktor Gyökeres

The Swedish striker stepped up in the absence of alternate attacking options Kai Havertz and Mikel Merino, adding two well-taken goals to the penalty he scored against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League in midweek.

Gyökeres stretched the Fulham defence with well-timed runs throughout the first hour of the game.

His clinical combination play with Bukayo Saka will be particularly encouraging for Arteta, as the Arsenal boss tries to manage his captain’s re-introduction to the squad for the conclusion of an injury-hit season.

Recognition should also be given to Myles Lewis-Skelly, who started a Premier League match in midfield for the first time in his career and looked assured up against Fulham’s creative trio of Samuel Chukwueze, Emile Smith Rowe, and Harry Wilson.

What’s Next?

Arsenal will host Atlético Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night, with the score tied at 1-1 after the first leg.

They will resume their title chase away to West Ham next Sunday, by which time Manchester City may have drawn level on points with Arsenal at the top of the league.

City will knock Arsenal off the top of the table if they win away at Everton on Monday night, and at home to Brentford next Saturday, by a combined margin of four or more goals.

Fulham’s next game is at home to Bournemouth next Sunday, who are also chasing European qualification for next season.
