Arsenal started their Premier League title defence with the perfect opening against newly promoted side Coventry, cruising to a 3-0 victory at the Emirates. Kai Havertz opened the scoring after 15 minutes before Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage eight minutes later, with Martin Ødegaard adding a third shortly after half-time.
Mikel Arteta’s side controlled the contest from the outset and rarely looked troubled, with their quality in the final third proving decisive. Havertz’s composed finish, Saka’s close-range strike and Ødegaard’s fortunate effort ensured Arsenal never looked like surrendering their grip on the game.
It was another convincing performance from the reigning champions, who had already beaten Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend. Arteta made two changes from that side, bringing Rice and Saka into the starting XI, while the absences of William Saliba and Jurrien Timber meant White, Mosquera, Gabriel and Calafiori started together in a Premier League match for the first time.
Arsenal were also without new signing Guimarães, who missed out with a thigh injury, while Tzolis was rewarded for an impressive pre-season with a start on the left of the attacking trio. Havertz led the line ahead of Gyökeres.
The hosts needed only 15 minutes to break the deadlock. Coventry’s Van Ewijk came under pressure from Tzolis and was unable to clear his lines cleanly, allowing Calafiori to seize on the loose ball. The Italian quickly fed Havertz, who guided a first-time shot into the far corner to put Arsenal ahead.

The goal continued Havertz’s excellent run in front of goal, with the Germany international scoring in four consecutive starts for the first time in English football.
Arsenal doubled their lead eight minutes later. Rice drove the attack forward before exchanging passes with Ødegaard and finding Tzolis in space. His low cross was parried by Rushworth, but Saka was in the right place to roll the ball into an empty net from just outside the six-yard box.

The strike marked the 60th occasion Arsenal have led by two or more goals in a Premier League home game under Arteta, further underlining their dominance at the Emirates during his reign.
Coventry were unable to find a route back into the contest after the interval, and Arsenal added a third four minutes into the second half. Ødegaard found space between the visitors’ defence and midfield before releasing Saka, who sent White into the box on the overlap. The full-back pulled the ball back for the Arsenal captain, whose scuffed effort looped towards goal and wrong-footed Rushworth before crossing the line.

With the three points effectively secured, Arsenal were able to manage the remainder of the match without serious difficulty. Coventry battled to stay in the game but were ultimately outclassed by a side already showing the confidence and control expected of defending champions.
Arsenal looked convincing both in their win against Manchester City in the Community Shield and in their opening fixture. They are already looking like favourites to retain their Premier League title.
