Arsenal’s new era: Mikel Arteta building a title-challenging squad.
A new chapter: Arsenal look to build on three straight second-place finishes.

Arsenal are set to enter a new era as the new season approaches. With changes to the board and squad, the Gunners will be aiming to build on their progress — the progress which has seen the team finish in second place for three consecutive seasons. Although no significant trophies have been collected during this phase, it’s clear to witness the upward trajectory the club has been on. Through the progress, however, some have begun to believe that this could potentially be the ceiling for Arteta’s side.

It’s without question that there are certain positions in the squad which need upgrading to ensure Arsenal have the adequate tools to build on the progress. The striker’s position is one of the clearer ones and this has seen Arteta already begin his pursuit for RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko. The 22-year-old netted 13 league goals last season in the Bundesliga, in a campaign his side seemingly struggled in.

Arsenal have been crying out for an out-and-out striker in previous years, which has seen them finish agonisingly in second place. A player of Sesko’s ability could be the final push over the line, as he has shown to have the potential to be the answer.

With league rivals Liverpool and Manchester City also strengthening during the summer transfer window, it’s crucial Arsenal continue to bolster their attack by also signing a wide attacker — a player who could stamp his authority in the left winger’s position. The front line in the previous two Premier League seasons has seen a lack of goals and creativity away from Bukayo Saka, and this has caused concern over whether the current players at their disposal are of the level required to win the league.

There is a plethora of wingers on the market which Andrea Berta and Mikel Arteta can have a look at, from Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao to AC Milan’s Rafael Leão.

A cheaper option could also be Atalanta star Ademola Lookman, a player who has showcased his talent in both Serie A and the Europa League. Having previously played in the Premier League with the likes of Everton, Fulham and Leicester City, he would certainly bring his wealth of experience with him too.

Progressing to the levels required doesn’t only require signing elite players but also correctly managing the stars currently at the club. A player who took the 23/24 season by storm was Ethan Nwaneri, and it is pivotal he is managed wisely going forward.

Future stars: Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly add depth and energy to the squad.

The 17-year-old has shown he can shine in plenty of positions whilst also being good depth for Bukayo Saka, which will also be of importance. Myles Lewis-Skelly is also another youngster who has thrived under Arteta and, having claimed the left-back position, he can now see himself become an integral member of the squad. Both these rising stars are also surrounded by high-level players to be educated from, as the likes of Martin Ødegaard and Ricardo Calafiori play in the respective positions.

The Gunners have also signed Gabriel Magalhães to a contract extension and have Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi joining. These moves will certainly play a role in propelling Arsenal towards reaching their targets.

The change from Edu Gaspar to Andrea Berta is also of significance, as every successful club has shown the importance of having a strong board.

Off the pitch: a strong board is key to delivering success on it.

Although Edu has had his success, the club will also need to find the correct personnel off the pitch in order to flourish on the field. The upcoming 25/26 season will signal which direction this new era is heading, and it’ll certainly have the eyes of the footballing world watching on.
