João Pedro and Palmer Fire Chelsea to Winning Start Under Rosenior

Chelsea picked up a solid 2–0 win over Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, with goals either side of half-time from João Pedro and Cole Palmer sealing three important points in Liam Rosenior’s first league game in charge. Although the scoreline suggests a comfortable afternoon, the match itself was far more competitive, with Brentford enjoying plenty of territory and creating several good chances that ultimately went unfinished.

The opening stages were fairly quiet, with Palmer’s wild effort over the crossbar the only real moment of note inside the first 15 minutes. Brentford then came agonisingly close to taking the lead when Kevin Schade broke into the box after being played in by Igor Thiago. Instead of shooting, Schade tried to square the ball across goal, which deflected off Tosin Adarabioyo and almost resulted in an own goal before Robert Sánchez produced a brilliant reaction save to keep Chelsea level.

Despite Brentford growing into the game, it was Chelsea who struck first on 26 minutes. A clearance from Michael Kayode fell kindly into the path of João Pedro, who reacted quickly and smashed a powerful effort past Caoimhín Kelleher. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR overturned the decision and awarded the goal.

Brentford responded well and created their best chance of the half soon after. Mikkel Damsgaard flicked the ball into the path of Mathias Jensen, whose sliced volley from close range clipped the outside of the post and went narrowly wide. Chelsea then should have doubled their lead just before the break when Pedro Neto delivered a perfect cross to Alejandro Garnacho at the back post, only for the winger to somehow turn the ball wide from point-blank range.

The Bees nearly equalised in stoppage time following a quick counter-attack. Thiago squared the ball across the box to Schade before Yehor Yarmoliuk’s follow-up effort was deflected over the bar, serving as another warning sign that Brentford remained very much in the contest.

Brentford started the second half strongly and continued to push for an equaliser. Schade again went close after being slipped through by Jensen, but Sánchez stood firm in a one-on-one situation. Moments later, Thiago narrowly missed converting a powerful header from a recycled corner as the visitors applied sustained pressure.

Once again, Brentford’s inability to take their chances proved costly. A loose touch from Kelleher was pounced on by substitute Liam Delap, who skipped past the goalkeeper before being brought down inside the penalty area. Palmer stepped up and confidently dispatched the spot kick to double Chelsea’s advantage and give the hosts some breathing space.

Brentford continued to test Chelsea late on, with long-range efforts from Jensen and Aaron Hickey forcing concentration from the defence, but they were unable to find a way back into the match. Chelsea managed the closing stages well, controlling possession and seeing the game out professionally.

Chelsea lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Sánchez in goal behind Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo and Marc Cucurella. Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández anchored midfield, while Pedro Neto, Palmer and Garnacho supported João Pedro in attack, with Delap making an impact from the bench. Brentford operated in a 4-3-3, with Kelleher in goal, Kayode, Ajer, Collins and Henry in defence, Janelt, Yarmoliuk and Jensen in midfield, and Damsgaard, Thiago and Schade leading the line.

Overall, it was a performance built as much on resilience as quality. Chelsea were not perfect, but they stayed composed in key moments and punished Brentford for missed opportunities. For Rosenior, it was an encouraging first league win that provides momentum moving forward, while Brentford will leave frustrated knowing the game offered more than the final scoreline suggests.
