Matchday 6 of the Turkish Süper Lig brought another round of intrigue and contrasting narratives. Galatasaray maintained their perfect start with a convincing win over Konyaspor, keeping their grip on top spot despite ongoing questions about their ability to replicate such dominance in Europe. Fenerbahçe, in the midst of a heated presidential election that saw Saadettin Saran replace Ali Koç, dropped points yet again, already their third slip in just six matches, casting early doubts on their title credentials. Meanwhile, Beşiktaş suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Göztepe, raising fresh concerns about their form under Sergen Yalçın and leaving supporters with more questions than answers.

Marquee Matchups Galatasaray 3–1 Konyaspor
Coming off a humiliating night in Frankfurt, Galatasaray needed a strong response at home, and they delivered. Yunus Akgün was the star of the evening, opening the scoring in the 23rd minute and later assisting Mauro Icardi for the team’s second goal just before half-time. Icardi, still visibly short of full fitness, nonetheless continued his reliable scoring form, netting his fourth goal of the season in only his second league start.
The second half saw Lucas Torreira add a third in the 64th minute with a precise strike from outside the box. Notably, Torreira refrained from celebrating, a gesture widely interpreted as a reaction to the disappointment in Frankfurt. Post-match comments confirmed the Uruguayan’s determination for the squad to improve and set higher standards in Europe.
While Konyaspor has been one of the more solid sides in the league this season, Galatasaray controlled proceedings without too much difficulty, showing once again the gap between their domestic dominance and their struggles to carry that form onto the continental stage.

Kasımpaşa 1–1 Fenerbahçe
This week again underlined how Fenerbahçe’s season is being shaped by both on-field and off-field drama. Away in Istanbul, Fenerbahçe dropped points, drawing 1–1 with Kasımpaşa despite striking first.
The night nearly started in disaster for the visitors: in the 2nd minute, goalkeeper Ederson gifted Kasımpaşa a golden chance, but it went begging. Fenerbahçe answered immediately—Marco Asensio made it 1–0 in the 3rd minute, briefly steadying nerves.
Kasımpaşa went down to 10 men just before halftime (VAR intervention), yet still found an equalizer on 64’ via Haris Hajradinović. Despite the numerical edge, Fenerbahçe couldn’t kill the game off—just 2 shots on target all match.
By the numbers: xG Kasımpaşa 1.38 – 0.80 Fenerbahçe; shots 17–9, box touches 20–20, corners 5–8. The draw came amid high political tension around the presidential election—Saadettin Saran ultimately prevailed—leaving supporters frustrated at another slip in the title race with Galatasaray perfect through six.

Göztepe 3–0 Beşiktaş
Beşiktaş’s trip to İzmir turned into a sobering night, as Göztepe comfortably ran out 3-0 winners. Statistically, the numbers highlighted the contrast between possession and productivity: Beşiktaş controlled 70% of the ball but managed just 0.60 xG, compared to Göztepe’s far more threatening 2.76 xG. Both sides registered 13 total shots, yet Göztepe hit the target 5 times to Beşiktaş’s 2.
Inside the box, Göztepe recorded 29 touches, slightly more than Beşiktaş’s 23, and also edged the corner count 6–5. The volume of dangerous entries conceded by Beşiktaş underscored defensive frailties that have been visible for weeks.
Göztepe, one of the most organized and tactically consistent sides in the league, exploited those gaps with clinical precision. For Beşiktaş, the new Sergen Yalçın era has not started brightly, and the defeat has only deepened questions about whether the current squad can adapt quickly enough to his demands. Supporters left with more doubts than optimism, as defensive instability once again proved costly.
