Matchday 5 of the Turkish Süper Lig came to a close with plenty of drama on and off the pitch. The weekend saw contentious refereeing decisions dominate headlines in the Fenerbahçe–Trabzonspor derby, while Beşiktaş secured a vital win under Sergen Yalçın in what felt like his first “prepared” outing of his second spell. Galatasaray, on the other hand, claimed all three points away to Eyüpspor but once again left supporters questioning the team’s overall performance.

As the domestic picture continues to shift, attention now turns to Europe. On Thursday, Galatasaray will face Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, returning to the Champions League stage in what promises to be a crucial early-season test. Meanwhile, with no Europa League games this week, the rescheduled matches previously set for 17 September 2025 have already been played, completing the postponed fixtures for six clubs.

Marquee Matchups Fenerbahçe 1–0 Trabzonspor

The marquee derby in Kadıköy turned into the weekend’s biggest talking point.

  • Controversies: In the 14th minute, Paul Onuachu’s goal was disallowed after VAR ruled a preceding elbow challenge in the build-up. Then in the 20th minute, Okay Yokuşlu’s yellow card was upgraded to a straight red following another VAR intervention. Both decisions sparked heated debate, especially from the Trabzonspor camp and rival fanbases.

  • Match flow: Reduced to 10 men, Trabzonspor still showed resilience but couldn’t hold on. Fenerbahçe eventually found the breakthrough through Youssef En-Nesyri, who scored the decisive goal. Domenico Tedesco, making his debut, opted for a back-four setup rather than his usual three-man defense, calming fans’ concerns for now.

  • Individual spotlight: New signing André Onana made his first appearance in goal for Trabzonspor. Despite the defeat, his performance exceeded expectations, suggesting that not all of the issues he faced at Manchester United were down to him alone.

Eyüpspor 0–2 Galatasaray

League leaders Galatasaray returned from the international break with three points but failed to convince in their performance.

  • Tactical picture: Eyüpspor compacted the pitch effectively, narrowing spaces and reducing team length to frustrate the visitors. Their approach worked well until the opening goal.

  • Goals: Mauro Icardi, still working his way back to full fitness, scored again — his third goal in four appearances this season. Later, Yunus Akgün doubled the lead after an assist from Barış Alper Yılmaz, who marked his return to the squad with both an on-field impact and a symbolic reconciliation with fans as he led the famous “Üçlü” celebration (a traditional post-match Galatasaray ritual where the chosen player signals for silence before orchestrating a rhythmic three-count cheer with the supporters, culminating in thunderous chants of Cim Bom Bom).

  • Squad notes: Ousmane missed the match due to a minor injury sustained on international duty, while Wilfried Singo made a substitute appearance. İlkay Gündoğan’s potential debut was delayed.

  • European focus: Galatasaray now turns its attention to Thursday’s Champions League clash away to Eintracht Frankfurt. Uncertainty remains over Ousmane’s availability, and whether Singo will earn his first start is still a question mark.

Beşiktaş 2–1 Başakşehir

With the benefit of the international break, Beşiktaş had more time to work under their new coach and looked more structured compared to previous weeks. However, consistency across 90 minutes still seems to be a challenge.

  • Match flow: In a fiery game with multiple cards and late drama, momentum swung both ways. At times Başakşehir pushed Beşiktaş deep into their own half, while the Black Eagles also managed to dominate in spells.

  • Player impact: New signing El Bilal Touré injected energy into the attack, while Cerny delivered a standout performance with 4 key passes and an assist, earning Man of the Match honors.

  • Decisive moment: In the dying minutes, Cengiz Ünder found the net, sealing a crucial victory for Beşiktaş and sending the home fans into jubilation.

  • Analysis: While the defensive unit remains shaky and still adapting, Beşiktaş’s attacking output has clearly improved under Yalçın. El Bilal Touré in particular looks set to play a pivotal role in the coming weeks.

  • Başakşehir’s side: Following Çağdaş Atan’s departure, the visitors failed to show the expected reaction and left empty-handed.

  • Table impact: With this win, Beşiktaş climbed to 6 points from 3 games, breaking into the top 10.

Fenerbahçe-Alanyaspor

Fenerbahçe suffered a costly setback at home just days before the upcoming presidential elections. Falling behind in the 18th minute, the hosts had a chance to equalize when VAR awarded a penalty in the 55th minute, but Anderson Talisca failed to convert. Nelson Semedo leveled the score in the 72nd minute, and Youssef En-Nesyri’s strike in the 76th put Fenerbahçe ahead. Yet, deep into stoppage time at 90+3, Alanyaspor snatched an equalizer to seal a 2-2 draw.

Beyond the drama on the scoreboard, the match was overshadowed by heavy criticism of the referee’s performance. Throughout the game, several decisions drew strong backlash from players, pundits, and supporters alike, with many in the public sphere labeling it as a poorly officiated match.

The dropped points not only hurt Fenerbahçe’s title chase but also cast a shadow over Ali Koç’s standing ahead of the elections.
