Paris Saint-Germain win the Super Cup in a nail-biting tie.

Tottenham let a 2-0 lead slip in the dying embers against a weakened French side, only back from summer break eight days prior.

Tottenham’s new manager, Thomas Frank, was just five minutes away from securing the club’s second trophy in two months after waiting 17 years for their first.

Goals from Micky van de Ven just before half-time and Cristian Romero shortly after the break had Spurs in cruise control against Club World Cup finalists and Champions League winners PSG.

That was until a burst of energy from substitute Lee Kang-In pulled the Parisians back into the tie.

The momentum switch was instant. Pressure piled onto a nervy Spurs side, and when the French champions needed something special deep into injury time, Ousmane Dembélé answered the call.

Seconds later, the whistle blew for full-time, and PSG were unsurprisingly favourites heading into the penalty shootout.

Vitinha missed, putting PSG 1-0 down in the shootout, but with disappointing attempts from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel, the Parisians went on to beat the Europa League winners 4-3 from the spot.

Frank, speaking after the game, said: “The operation succeeded, but the patience died,” signifying a glimmer of hope after Spurs’ abysmal Premier League campaign last season.

They didn’t just compete they outworked and outclassed the best team in Europe for most of the match. A sign of a positive year ahead?

PSG were tired, lackadaisical, and unenthusiastic in their play. But in order to be the best, you have to win when you’re not firing on all cylinders and that’s exactly how they won their first Super Cup, proving they’re still the team to beat.
